Basic Properties of Matter
Mass  Represents the amount of matter in an object.
 Often measured in grams (g) or kilograms (kg).
Weight  Related to mass because it represents the force of
gravity on the mass.
 Expressed in newtons (N), dynes, or pounds (lb)
 The greater the mass of an object, the greater is its
weight in the same location
Basic Properties of Matter
Volume  Refers to the space that matter occupies
 Units of volume include liters (L), milliliters (mL), and
cubic centimeters (cc)
Density  Represents how closely packed the amount of matter
is in the space it occupies.
 Density is mass per unit volume
 Common units includes grams per milliliter (g/mL)
and kilograms/liter (kg/liter).

Basic Properties of Matter
Special Properties of Matter
Special or specific properties
 Properties that may be observed only in some kinds of matter.
Ductility  The ability of a material to have its shape change
 Ability of a solid material to be
stretched or shaped under tensile
stress.
 Tensile stress – any force that pulls
the two ends of a material away
from each other.
Special Properties of Matter
Malleability  Property of substance that describes its ability be bent or
hammered into a thin sheet without breaking
 The ability of a solid material to be shaped or bent under
compressive stress.
 Compressive stress – is any force that pushes the two ends of
a material toward each other.
Color  Physical quality that you see when you look at an object.
 It involves a specific combination of hue, lightness or brightness, and
saturation.
 such as red, blue, green, orange, yellow, and purple are the results of
how objects reflect or emit light.
Shape  Property that describes the external form or outline of an object.
 Note: any matter that is solid has a definite shape.
 Liquids and gases, because they flow, have no definite shape and just
take the shape of their containers.
Conductivity
 The ability of a material to allow heat and/or electricity to flow
through it freely and quickly.
 For example: imagine you pour a hot chocolate drink into a
Styrofoam cup and into an aluminum cup.
 When you hold the cups in each hand which container do you think
would feel hotter?
 Metals – are good conductors because the particles that make them up are
arranged very close to one another, allowing them to pass along heat or
electricity quite well.
 Ex. Silver , copper, aluminum, gold
Special Properties of Matter
Fluidity
 The ability to flow
Hardness
 Liquid and gases flow
 Meausures of the
resistance of a solid to
being scratched.
An object’s physical form, such as
round, oblong, or irregular

A quality that is related to the light an
object absorbs or reflects. With this
property, you can distinguish a red
apple from an orange just by looking
at a portion of their peel.

Three other properties
1. Strength
 the ability of a material
to support weight or
withstand an external
force without breaking.
Three other properties
2. Luster
 the ability of a material to glow as
it reflects light.
 Diamond and silk have luster.
Three other properties
3. Porosity  the ability of a material to permit another material to
flow through it
 has some holes or spaces between its particles
Physical and Chemical Properties of Matter
Physical Property  properties of matter that observed or determined
without changing the composition of matter.
color
size
texture
shape
Physical and Chemical Properties of Matter
Chemical Property  properties of matter that can only be determined by
causing a change in the composition of the substance
Physical and Chemical Properties of Matter
Two Common Chemical Property
1. Combustibility and Flammability
 Ability of certain kinds of matter to burn or materials to make
them catch fire easily
Quiz 1
B. A property of matter may be used to explain why something happens. Which
property could be related to the following situations? Write it on the line. There
can be more than one answer for each item.
_______________1. A metal is flattened into sheets
_______________2. Wood Burns
_______________3. Diamond glow
_______________4. The smell of “adobo” from the kitchen reaches the living
room
_______________5. The stain from the toilet is removed when muriatic acid is poured
on it

  • 1.
  • 2. Properties of Matter Basic Properties Special Properties Mass Weight Volume Density Physical Properties Chemical Properties Color Texture Temperature, etc. Combustibility Corrosiveness Reaction with acid, etc.
  • 3. Basic Properties of Matter 4 Basic Properties of Matter 1. Mass 2. Weight 3. Volume 4. Density Matter – anything that occupies space and has mass Basic or general properties – common to all
  • 5. Basic Properties of Matter Mass  Represents the amount of matter in an object.  Often measured in grams (g) or kilograms (kg). Weight  Related to mass because it represents the force of gravity on the mass.  Expressed in newtons (N), dynes, or pounds (lb)  The greater the mass of an object, the greater is its weight in the same location
  • 6. Basic Properties of Matter Volume  Refers to the space that matter occupies  Units of volume include liters (L), milliliters (mL), and cubic centimeters (cc) Density  Represents how closely packed the amount of matter is in the space it occupies.  Density is mass per unit volume  Common units includes grams per milliliter (g/mL) and kilograms/liter (kg/liter).
  • 7. Basic Properties of Matter 𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑦 = 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 ρ= 𝑚 𝑣 or 𝑑 = 𝑚 𝑣 𝑑 = 15𝑔 20𝑚𝑙 Example: What is the density of a piece of wood if its mass is 15 g and its volume is 20 ml? 𝑑 = 0.75𝑔 𝑚𝑙 𝑑 = 1.0𝑔/𝑚𝑙
  • 8. Basic Properties of Matter Compute the density of each of the materials in the table given below. Then write float or sink in the last column. Material Mass (g) Volume (mL) Density Float or sink in Water Silver 42 4 Alcohol 1.6 2 Aluminum 13.5 5 10.5 g/mL 0.8 g/mL 2.7 g/mL sink float sink Silver d = 𝑚 𝑣 d = 42 𝑔 4 𝑚𝑙 d = 10.5 𝑔/𝑚𝐿 Alcohol d = 𝑚 𝑣 d = 1.6 𝑔 2 𝑚𝑙 d = 0.8 𝑔/𝑚𝑙 Aluminum d = 𝑚 𝑣 d = 13.5 𝑔 5 𝑚𝑙 d = 2.7 𝑔/𝑚𝑙 Basic Properties of Matter
  • 9. Special Properties of Matter Special or specific properties  Properties that may be observed only in some kinds of matter. Ductility  The ability of a material to have its shape change  Ability of a solid material to be stretched or shaped under tensile stress.  Tensile stress – any force that pulls the two ends of a material away from each other.
  • 10. Special Properties of Matter Malleability  Property of substance that describes its ability be bent or hammered into a thin sheet without breaking  The ability of a solid material to be shaped or bent under compressive stress.  Compressive stress – is any force that pushes the two ends of a material toward each other.
  • 11. Color  Physical quality that you see when you look at an object.  It involves a specific combination of hue, lightness or brightness, and saturation.  such as red, blue, green, orange, yellow, and purple are the results of how objects reflect or emit light.
  • 12. Shape  Property that describes the external form or outline of an object.  Note: any matter that is solid has a definite shape.  Liquids and gases, because they flow, have no definite shape and just take the shape of their containers.
  • 13. Conductivity  The ability of a material to allow heat and/or electricity to flow through it freely and quickly.  For example: imagine you pour a hot chocolate drink into a Styrofoam cup and into an aluminum cup.  When you hold the cups in each hand which container do you think would feel hotter?  Metals – are good conductors because the particles that make them up are arranged very close to one another, allowing them to pass along heat or electricity quite well.  Ex. Silver , copper, aluminum, gold
  • 14. Special Properties of Matter Fluidity  The ability to flow Hardness  Liquid and gases flow  Meausures of the resistance of a solid to being scratched.
  • 15. An object’s physical form, such as round, oblong, or irregular hspae s h a p e
  • 16. A quality that is related to the light an object absorbs or reflects. With this property, you can distinguish a red apple from an orange just by looking at a portion of their peel. ocolr c o l o r
  • 17. Three other properties 1. Strength  the ability of a material to support weight or withstand an external force without breaking.
  • 18. Three other properties 2. Luster  the ability of a material to glow as it reflects light.  Diamond and silk have luster.
  • 19. Three other properties 3. Porosity  the ability of a material to permit another material to flow through it  has some holes or spaces between its particles
  • 20. Physical and Chemical Properties of Matter Physical Property  properties of matter that observed or determined without changing the composition of matter. color size texture shape
  • 21. Physical and Chemical Properties of Matter Chemical Property  properties of matter that can only be determined by causing a change in the composition of the substance
  • 22. Physical and Chemical Properties of Matter Two Common Chemical Property 1. Combustibility and Flammability  Ability of certain kinds of matter to burn or materials to make them catch fire easily
  • 23.
  • 24. Quiz 1 B. A property of matter may be used to explain why something happens. Which property could be related to the following situations? Write it on the line. There can be more than one answer for each item. _______________1. A metal is flattened into sheets _______________2. Wood Burns _______________3. Diamond glow _______________4. The smell of “adobo” from the kitchen reaches the living room _______________5. The stain from the toilet is removed when muriatic acid is poured on it
