3. Definition
of
Matter
Matter is the scientific term for any kind of material.
Matter is everything with mass and volume.
Matter must have at least one subatomic particle, but most matter
is made up of atoms.
"matter" is used to mean a pure substance.
All substances have unique properties by which they can be
identified from the unique colour, boiling point and densities
Some of matter react with water, air and acids
We use properties to identify and categorize the matter

5. Physical Properties
Change in which the
matter's physical
appearance is
altered, but
composition remains
unchanged.
can be observed or
measured without
changing the
composition of
matter.
observe and
describe matter.
often described as
intensive and
extensive properties.
An intensive
property is a bulk
property, meaning it
doesn't depend on
system size or
material amount.
extensive property is additive
for independent, non-
interacting subsystems. The
property is proportional to
the amount of material in the
system.
6. Intensive
• density: ρ=m/v
• colour: The pigment or shade
• conductivity: electricity to
flow through the substance
• Density
• Hardness
• luster
Extensive
• mass: how much matter in
the sample
• volume: How much space
the sample takes up
• length: How long the sample
is
7. Physical changes involve moving molecules
around, but not changing them.
Changes of state (changes from a solid to a
liquid or a gas and vice versa)
Separation of a mixture
Physical deformation (cutting, denting,
stretching)
Making solutions (special kinds of mixtures) .
8. Chemical Properties
Chemical properties are the properties that describe matter’s reactions with other substances.
Chemical properties cover aspects of matter that can only be seen by altering the chemical composition of a
sample, or by seeing how it behaves in a chemical reaction.
alters the composition of the original matter.
Different elements or compounds are present at the end of the chemical change.
The atoms in compounds are rearranged to make new and different compounds.
10. Recap Question
