AS AN INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE.
HISTORICAL. Active colonialism in the era of
the Great Geographical Discoveries and the
Enlightenment unusually expanded the
territory of the British Empire
("the country over which the sun does not
set," as it was nicknamed at that time -
because the possessions of the British Crown
existed in almost all the time zones of the
planet).
