Government's wheat procurement has increased by nearly 2 per cent
to 26.47 million tonnes (MT) so far in 2015-16 marketing year, though

rains.Government's wheat procurement has increased by nearly 2 per
cent to 26.47 million tonnes (MT) so far in 2015-16 marketing year,
though quality of bulk of grains is affected due to hailstorms and
unseasonal rains. The arrival of wheat has been lower this season, as
on date 30.55 MT has reached mandis across the country, compared to
32.94 MT in the year-ago period. The Centre has fixed the wheat
procurement target at 30.05 million tonnes in 2015-16 marketing year
(April-March) as against 28 million tonnes bought by the Food
Corporation of India (FCI) during last year."More than 80 per cent of
the wheat is procured under relaxed specifications, which is either
shriveled or there is loss of luster. While the remaining is of fair
average quality,"Aiming to provide relief to farmers affected by the
unseasonal heavy rain and hailstorm, last month the Centre had
relaxed quality norms for procurement of wheat in the major
producing states including Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh,
Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Chandigarh,All these states together
contribute more than 95 per cent of the total wheat produced in the
country. The Food Ministry had reduced the value that is cut for
shriveled and broken grains by up to 10 per cent instead of 6 per cent
and procurement of luster lost wheat containing 10 per cent affected
kernels without value cut.The Ministry had also allowed the FCI to
purchase luster lost grain containing more than 10 per cent and up to
50 per cent kernels at a value cut of Rs 3.63 per quintal.Meanwhile, on
state-wise basis Punjab continues to be the largest contributor to the
food basket of the county with 9.85 MT of wheat procured this
year.Madhya Pradesh has jumped to second position in wheat
procurement with 7.15 MT, replacing Haryana which slipped to third
position with 6.75 MT.
Guarseed futures plummeted too. The sowing of the commodity is directly
linked torainfall and good weather can help lift sowings in next month. The
NCDEX Guarseed futuresare trading at Rs 4950 per quintal, down 0.36% on
the day for June delivery. A slightlyweak undertone in global crude oil prices
is also keeping guar complex under check. Risingoil prices normally lift the
export demand of guargum. Worries over a probable ban onMaggi Noodles in
key states in India can also have a moderating effect on guargum asguargum is
an ingredient in the popular food product. Guargum futures for June are
down0.18% to Rs 11080 per quintal.
Jeera continued to slump today, extending a trend witnessed in the first
session of theweek. Most of the agri commodities on NCDEX plummeted
today with the traders refusing toenter long in the face of continued good pre
Monsoon rainfall. Most of these commoditieshave run up in last few months
and traders seem to be taking profits ahead of the start ofmonsoon in next
week. Major counter leading the bear charge were Turmeric, Jeera,
Soybeansand Guar. It will be interesting to see the direction these counters
take in the currentweek after this severe correction on the first session of the
week. Jeera slumped as the spot prices neared Rs 18k levels amid thin export
demand. Majorbuying would emerge only around Ramadan now and falling
arrivals might not support pricesmuch after a near 50% rally in spot prices
over last six months. The NCDEX Jeera futuresfor June are trading at Rs
17470 per quintal, down 2.70% on the day. The far month futureshave crashed
even more. NCDEX September Jeera futures are down 3.63% to trade at Rs
18470per quintal.
Rainfall has been decent in the country in last few days. Some good pre-
Monsoon raincoupled with thundershower activity in North India in last few
days has helped the countryin recording surplus rain this week. According to
the data available with SkymetMeteorology Division in India, rainfall in the
country from May 14 to May 20 has been inexcess of 32%. This is looking
promising from the point of view of the Kharif harvest andan early start to the
sowing can be expected if the trend continues.

was estimated at 19.11 lakh tonne. The minor decrease in third Adv . Est is mainly
attributed to inclement weather and yield loss. India has produced 17.27 lakh tonne
castor seed in 2013-14.Target for the year was 16.65 lakh tonne.
China, EU,US may start restricted buying once again by the end of the month.
