The document describes the process of constructing a contents page for a music magazine. It discusses various layout and design choices tested, including using a flat template, column layouts, image placement, text styling, and color schemes. The creator experimented with different headers, page numbers, and image treatments before settling on a final design with a record sleeve header, page numbers in squares to match the record covers, and images in colored boxes for consistency.

1. Constructing my contents page
This is how I have constructed my AS
media music magazine
Emily Rachel Leece
2. Flat plan
• I have created a flat
plan on Photoshop
the same as the
one that I have
drawn. By doing
this I know where
everything is going
to go, speeding up
the process as
everything is
already in its place I
just have to go on
to add the contents
of the page.
3. CONTENTS
• As I'm trying to
keep things
simplistic I have
decided to have
the title as the
page ‘contents’
in bold writing
the same colour
and style as the
masthead. This
makes it clear
what this page is
about.
4. Images
• All of the image
added to this page
were photographed
by myself. I have
kept them small so
that they don’t take
away too much
attention from the
contents sections
and angled them
slightly to make
them feel less
formal.
5. ADDING CONTENTS
• I started adding my
contents to this page
by using red text so
that I was able to keep
the contents within the
boxes that I had
previously added to
help with the layout of
the page.
• After adding the
contents I started
removing the black
boxes so that my
contents were simply
on the white
background of the
page.
6. Layout change
• I have slightly
altered the layout
of the contents
page. Instead of
having the
contents split into
two columns I
have put all the
contents down
the left hand side
of the page. In
addition to this I
have put all the
images down the
right hand side of
the page and
started splitting
them up using
black lines.
7. CHANGES
• I have now
decided to
change the
page title from
‘Contents’ to
my masthead
as this is a
common
convention in
magazines.
8. CHANGES
• I have made dramatic
changes to my contents
page. I felt like the other
layout didn’t fit into the
style like my front cover
and double page spread.
Therefore I have
photographed the records
from the double page
spread and used this as
the header image for my
contents page.
• As well as this I changed
‘inside this mag’ to ‘in this
edition of THIRDSTUDIO’. I
think this makes my
contents page feel more
professional than the
previous layout.
9. Contents layout
• I have now
changed the
contents page
number and story
headlines from
capital letters to
lower case. As well
as this I changed
them from bold to
regular. I think by
doing this I have
made my contents
page feel more
relaxed.
10. Small images and box
• To keep this
contents page
suitable for my
target audience
I have added a
bright pop of
colour behind
my images that
makes them
stand out more.
This bright
colour is the
same red as my
page numbers.
11. Page numbers
• As this magazine has an
‘edgy’ vibe I have
decided that instead of
having my page
numbers in cirlce to
have them in squares.
Square also link into
the rest of the
magazine as they’re the
same shape as the
record covers.
• I have kept the page
numbers the same
colour as the main
headline and used the
same shape and colour
on the page numbers
for the small images.
