EMPLOYMENT HISTORY
Huntington Ingalls Industries, Newport News Shipbuilding—Electrical Engineer
Newport News, VA June 2006-March 2016
• Served as lead Combat and Electronics System engineer for submarine technologies.
Familiar with SONAR system and component platform integration and testing. Knowledge
of the SONAR components level including active/passive hydrophone/transducers and
hydrophone/transducer array design, operation and performance. Areas of expertise involve:
o Light Weight Wide Aperture Array (LWWAA) Sonar System
o AN/WSQ-9 (Signal Analysis System)
o Combat Control Systems
o Subregional Warfare System
• Resolved issues documented by technicians on Inspection Reports (IRs) for Los Angeles and
SEAWOLF Class Submarines located within Huntington Ingalls Industries shipyard and
other shipyards.
o This includes providing material (CFM or GFE/GFM) as necessary, step-by-step
removal and/or installation instructions.
o Provide any drawings, procedures or subsequent documents that the installation
activity may not have to perform the work.
• Resolved issues documented by the trades or supervisors on Engineering Reports (ERs) for
Virginia Class Submarines. Issues included:
o Drawing discrepancies, missing/broken material requiring replacement
o Technical instructions requested to work a particular job that may require Design
Yard (DY) approval.
o Responsible for summarizing the problem a 5188 ER to the DY and providing
recommended technical solution with justification requesting concurrence.
• Reviewed any documented problems or designs against the SUBSAFE manual and DSS-SOC
as well as the DDGOS.
• Resolved Vendor Information Request (VIR) forms, which get internally approved or the
information is required to go the Design Yard (DY) for approval via ER. Once the DY
answers Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) can release the ER along with the VIR to be
issued.
• Wrote Work Deferral Requests (WDRs) to get Navy approval to defer unaccomplished work
to another availability. This request requires technical justification why the work cannot be
completed prior to delivery and also listing the consequences of the work not being complete
when boat goes to sea.
• Performed cost estimation of man hours required to accomplish various engineering tasks via
Field Modification Request (FMRs)
• Reviewed departmental engineering drawings and vendor provided Temporary Alteration
drawings for technical adequacy and for any discrepancies. Ensure the drawing meets IEEE
standards, checking for errors, making sure specific notes are present and EMI requirements
are correct. Provide any comments for corrective action as needed.
• Attended Integrated Product Team (IPT) meetings on future products such as Technical
Insertion (TI) upgrades on submarines and attended meetings at General Dynamics Electric
Boat during the development of the Virginia Class Lab Array to replace the Sonar Sphere that
started on the third block hulls.
• Reviewed Manual Change Requests (MCRs) and Technical Manual Deficiency Error Reports
to ensure the recommended changes are correct and do not create a problem downstream the
system. Provide comments if there are issues with the changes or if there are
recommendations or questions that need further answered to provide a complete review.
• Researched Design for Affordability (DFA) studies for the Ohio Replacement Program.
Each DFA item requires explanation why it may be a good candidate to pursue or why not.
Providing information if cost effective.
• SSN688 Los Angeles Class, Virginia Class, and SEAWOLF Class Submarine Planning Yard
Liaison. Responsible for providing technical direction and resolutions for emergency action
requests, issues, and questions that arise during various communication shipboard
installations and upgrades for AN/BYS-1 and AN/BYG-1 systems.
• Provided technical troubleshooting guidance on test procedures to resolve complex problems
during testing and integration of electronic equipment onboard the submarine.
• Provided support for Electronic Systems on all classes of submarines which included
discussions with NAVSEA, Supervisors of Shipbuilding (SUPSHIP), Vendors, In-Service
Engineering Agent (ISEA) and other essential high management to help provide full support
for situations that may occur.
• Coordinated and led meetings involving NAVSEA, NUWC, SUPSHIP, Electric Boat
Corporation (Lead Design Yard), Vendors, and management to resolve technical problems or
new designs.
• Performed research on Sensor Suite ShipAlt to determine if Hull and Structure
Inspection/Maintenance/Survey requirements are required. Worked with structural engineers
through the duration of the research. Developed a white paper on the topic to be presented to
high end managers and the Navy.
• Backup lead for the Inspection Report (IR) coordinator. While the lead coordinator was out, I
was in charge of managing the schedule (due dates) of IRs, incoming IRs that needed
distributed to the appropriate supervisor, provide status updates to the construction supervisor
to present in the weekly meeting.
• Have been involved in various projects that required traveling to companies such Electric
Boat Corporation and Northrop Grumman to discuss improved/new ship designs with
management, lead developers/engineers, navy officials and other essential project personnel.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
• Volunteered to participate in two separate waterfront engineering rotations. An engineering
liaison to the trades. Responsibilities included resolving issues documented on both
Inspection Reports (IRs) for the SSN769 Toledo and Engineering Reports (ERs) for Virginia
Class Submarines (VCS). Worked directly with the trades and supervisors to resolve the
problem they were encountering. Frequent trips to the boat were necessary on the Toledo
(overhauled commissioned boat) and the modules for the VCS in the facilities. Utilizing
drawing, technical manuals and procedures to assist in providing resolutions. The rotations
gave exceptional hands on experience and expertise with all levels of engineering from
Electrical, Mechanical, Structural and Piping.
o Experienced resolving problems in areas of engineering outside of Electrical. Some
of which involved providing welding instructions to structures or attaching a
component to a bulkhead which needed to be welded or studs in place which required
a joint index sheet.
• Rotated within the current department from the Combat Systems and Electronics group to the
Power and Lighting group to provide assistance and gain experience in a new area involving
power analysis, checking power requirements and information on drawings, and resolving
technical problems.
o Performed Load Balance analysis for Power Distribution Units (PDUs) to ensure the
original power requirements hold and ensure have adequate fuses. If necessary,
recommending to relocate loads and upgrade fuse sizes.
o Worked with engineers, technicians, construction supervisors, general foreman on
problems that were occurring with providing Shore Power to the submarine and
another issue with the Emergency Diesel Generator.
• Attended Navigator training class to become a navigator (mentor) to new hire or transfer
employees. Assisting them with guidance and getting them accumulated into the department
and their job requirements. Ensure their work space is set up for them upon arrival and
passwords for systems they will be using already processed. Available to help answer any
questions they may have as a new hire or new transfer to the particular building. Provide
information about the group and the surrounding, about the jobs, the area in general if they
are new to the area.
