3. Area
Austria is a small, predominantly mountainous country
in Central Europe, approximately
between Germany, Italy and Hungary. It has a total area of
83,871 square kilometers (32,383 sq mi), about twice the size
of Switzerland.
The landlocked country shares national borders with
Switzerland (a non-European Union member state, which it
borders for 158 km, or 98 mi) and the principality
of Liechtenstein (also a non-EU member state, of which it
borders for 34 km or 21 mi) to the west, Germany (801 km or
497 mi) and the Czech Republic (402 km or 249 mi)
and Slovakia (105 km or 65 mi) to the north, Hungary to the
east (331 km or 205 mi), and Slovenia (299 km or 185 mi) and
Italy (404 km or 251 mi) to the south (total: 2,534 km or
1,574 mi).

Density
• The current population of Austria is 9,070,715 as of Sunday,
October 3, 2021, based on the latest United Nations data.
• Austria 2020 population is estimated at 9,006,398 people at
mid year according to UN data.
• Austria population is equivalent to 0.12% of the total world
population.
• Austria ranks number 97 in the list of countries (and
dependencies) by population.
• The population density in Austria is 109 per Km2 (283 people
per mi2).
• The total land area is 82,409 Km2 (31,818 sq. miles)
• 57.3 % of the population is urban (5,159,360 people in 2020)
• The median age in Austria is 43.5 years.
8. Current
Situation
According to a Euro-barometer survey, 96% of
Austrians claim they separate their general waste from
packaging and 99% take measures to separate paper
from other waste.
Austria has ban on certain types of waste like
products has a total organic carbon emission rate of
more than 5% and also on plastic bags.
Austria has a free mobile app called Müllapp
Penalties for illegal dumping waste there is a fine of up
to €36,340 or two years in prison
9. Impactof
Covid-19
ACR+ ran a survey targeting municipal and local
authorities to understand and assess the impact of the
COVID-19 on their waste systems.
The volume of waste, especially household waste, is
higher; face masks, PPE kits and hazardous materials
such as batteries.
The use of disinfectant prior to sorting waste, as well
as storing waste for 9 days, may help to inactivate the
COVID-19 virus.

Most of the solid waste generated in the country is
categorized and used for energy generation and used as a raw
material in the scheme of waste to energy , in which energy is
generated from biomass (which majorly comes from household
waste and agricultural waste). Austria has enabled more than
42 operating Waste Incretion Facilities and 17 MBT(
Mechanical and Biological Treatment) plants. Each plant is
capable of recycling 450,000 tons of waste and producing 131,000
giga joules of energy per year, and constitutes as 31 percent of
the total energy produced, which in turn resulted in from 9.9%
in 2015 to 10.6% in 2017.
Austrian environmental technologies, has generated more than 41
thousand jobs in the environmental protection sector and
a turnover of 12.3 billion Euro has been generated by 2015.
Austria also has the highest export rate as per 2015, (which was
about 72%) of the Austrian environmental technology sector to the
international market.

12. Conclusion
We as individuals should not treat waste segregation as
an obligation but should inculcate a habit for it.
We need to focus on human psychology which has been
trained to treat waste as something filthy and something
which doesn’t concern any interest.
We need to understand that a single individual too can
make a difference.
Planning the waste management and recycling for all of
the rubbish produced in this country is an enormous task
which involves both logistical planning and scientific
knowledge and understanding in order to balance the
impact on the environment and the cost effectiveness of
the process.
It's not just the responsibility of the authorities , but the
change should start with you.
