Setting the Context: How Look2College came to be
Why college as early as middle grades
There are several major concerns students have when it comes to planning for college. Students lack knowledge of and the ability to plan for college:
83% of surveyed middle school students said they know nothing or very little about the high school courses that are required to graduate.
Students from low-income families have limited access to college planning and career information.
Students lack preparedness:
Students’ level of academic attainment in 8th grade has a greater impact on college and career readiness by the time they complete high school than anything they do academically in high school.
Students need at least a 3.0 GPA in the middle grades to be college-bound; a 3.5 GPA gives them at least a 50% chance.
Students and parents are concerned about cost:
92% of middle level students who said there’s a chance they might not attend college said the reason was that it costs too much.
One-third of middle school students and their families have not considered how they are going to pay for college.

Ad hoc group 2015
Middle School Ad Hoc Advisory Group convened in spring 2015 – variety or organizations & schools from across the state
sought out their expertise as we looked to the future direction of our middle school efforts
it was determined college access programming was needed for 6th grade students
Look2College evolution
After an extensive review of middle level college access offerings from around the country, three major themes for the program emerged: career options, how to make good choices, and the impact of saving money.
“The Look” – we wanted it to look very different than KH2GO, and liked the idea of characters.
A pilot group of middle schools were identified to “test” the program with their 6th grade students in Spring 2016.
Pilot Group – spring 2016
Five schools piloted the program: Valerie Bergo, Irving Middle School, Lincoln; Roger Doud, York Middle School; Angie Drahota, Ravenna Jr.-Sr. High School; Kirk Ramsey, Barr Middle School, Grand Island; Thang Tran, King Science & Technology Magnet School, Omaha.
Schools reported the program took more time than expected, but students liked the ability to interact with the publication. Changes were made to printed materials, and an accompanying PowerPoint presentation was requested.
The program launched in Fall 2016 to all schools with 6th grade students where EducationQuest currently provides services.
