3. SignUpTool - What is it?
A web-based tool for signing-up and allocating
students to course tutorials, etc
Gives student SOME say in which tutorial slot
Course Administrators confirm the automatic
allocations or can tweak / change allocations
Can also be used to allocate students to
projects
http://www2.ph.ed.ac.uk/signuptool
4. How does it work?
1. Courses/Activities/Slots setup ahead of time
by Course Administrators
2. Semester starts: Signup forms made
available
3. Students get to signup form via Learn
4. Once some students sign up, course
admins login and confirm the (balanced?)
allocations generated
Students see their allocated tutorial
immediately
5. Setup – Courses, Activities,
Slots
For setting up each course, need:
1. Course code from Learn (variation on
Euclid)
2. Course name & info – organiser, admin
3. For Activities: Available slot day/time +
locations
Demo
6. About Students
Previous years – automatic feed from WebCT
Students can SignUp 24 hours after enrolled
Students dropping from course frees tutorial slot
Feed from Learn NOT in place yet (working on it!)
Course students currently on manual update –
Keith
Let Keith know if you create a Course in
SignUpTool – so he can seed it with students
Keith will update SignUpTool with students every
other day until automatic feed in place
Basically: you don’t need to worry about students
7. Ready for SignUps
Create new Courses/Activities in ‘not visible’
state
Choose a date/time to make the course
signups available
Make the activity ‘visible’ by checking the
checkbox
Make the weblink to SignUpTool from Learn
visible (if you’ve hidden it)
Recommend having another link in Learn to
activity ‘Allocations’ page – URL to use is
shown in SignUpTool
8. Allocation
Demo
Number of Allocations pending shown in red
Go to ‘Allocate Pending Students’ to allocate
Can override or just select some to allocate
Use ‘Shuffle Students’ to randomly order
allocations
How frequently you allocate, depends on
course/activity – every few days?
Can also edit an allocation and add a
comment
9. Tidy Up
Can ‘Export’ a course for use next year
Can be imported and adjusted for next year’s
intake of students – need to change Course Id
and other info
