2. On avg. 12.2 out of 1,000 children aged 7-9 years
diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Europe.
Direct costs from € 797 to € 11,189 per individual
for six months. Tutorial support is the second costliest voice.
Costs of productivity losses among carers, for six months,
go from € 307.70 to € 4,467.40 per carer.
Mothers of children with ASD on average work fewer hours per week and
earn 56 % less than mothers of children with no health limitation.

Some numbers
3. What is autism
Autism refers to a broad range
of conditions also characterized by:
Difficulty in communication
and interaction with other people
Symptoms that bring to the person’s
inability to function properly in school,
work, and other areas of life
People with ASD get easily over-stimulated
by the world we live in, even more in an urban
environment (sounds, colors, human interaction)
4. Children with autism spectrum disorder
can find it really hard to focus on things
that don’t interest them – for example [...]
walking safely across the road.
But they can keep their attention
on things they like.

5. What is autism
THROWING OUT THE GARBAGE
The smell is too strong How do I open the dumpster?
Where is the dumpster supposed to be?
There is a spider on the sidewalk The dumpster is not next to the yellow one
?
6. The autonomy issue
Autism means also:
The inability to overcome
stressful moments and
call for help
The constant need for
someone to guide you
through daily activities
The lack of independence
in moving from one place
to another
8. The purpose of LetMeAut
Carers can customize the route, manage the indications
to display and constantly monitor the progress remotely
An application intended
to guide autistic people
safely along a path
The person follows time/location synchronized directions,
thanks to Galileo
Biological stress indicators are observed
10. Galileo
With a standard smartphone, Galileo can be used for our purposes
Allows accurate position in urban environment
High reliabilty and availability
Fast connection to the satellites
Galileo is bringing high-accuracy positioning to the mass market
12. Customization
Families can largely customize the task so to adapt the design:
to the task performed
to the child characteristic and preferences
Experts will provide the app to the families and give them the needed support
to use it properly and to make it use by the child
13. Activity recognition
Novel machine learning technologies
for current activity detection
Running
Walking
Falling
Standing
Crossed multi-sensor information
Analysis of stressful behaviours
Galileo signal
Inertial sensors
Biometric data
14. Work organization
Three stages will mark the development of our app:
The dataset collection
The user interface optimization
The test phase with ASD subjects
We are already keeping an eye on current calls
and potentially interested associations
Next step: funding research
15. Further Research
Consulted experts highlighted the chance to extend the application
Alzheimer
Down syndrome
General mental retardation
Integration with smart cities
by involving:to other disabilities:
Internet of Things
16. These people see their mates and understand
they cannot do the same everyday tasks.
Managing to reach a place autonomously
is a way for them to feel less different.
