The mobile phone and connected tablet computer are allowing for the distribution of a broad range of medical and support services. Advances in genome sequencing and the associated field of genomics will give us better
understanding of how diseases affect different individuals. With the genetic profile of a person’s
disease and knowledge of their response to treatment, it should be possible to find out more
about the likely effectiveness of medical interventions such as prescribing drugs to treat a disease
(pharmacogenomics).
2. Digital therapeutics
Digital therapeutics are health or social care interventions delivered either wholly or significantly
through a smartphone or a laptop. They effectively embed clinical practice and therapy into a
digital form. At a minimum, these interventions combine provision of clinically curated
information on a health condition with advice and techniques for dealing with that condition.
Many digital therapy platforms include a way for people to connect with peers and share their
experience, or to connect with health professionals remotely. Whether they are fully automated
or blend automation with supervision, the therapy offered can be tailored to the needs of the
specific user. Digital therapeutics are often cited as a solution to help manage long-term
conditions that call for behaviour changes or to prevent diseases in the long run.
3. Smart or implantable drug delivery mechanisms
We know that between a third and a half of all medication prescribed to people with long-term
conditions is not taken as recommended. Several technologies in development could enable
patients and care professionals to monitor and improve adherence to a prescribed drug regime
either through automation or providing better information about medication usage.
4. At-home or portable diagnostics
Devices cheap enough or portable enough to be transported to people’s homes to provide
diagnostic information aren’t new – think of a GP doing home visits armed with a stethoscope.
But recent innovations mean that devices previously only kept in a hospital or a GP surgery are
now portable or cheap enough to be located in people’s homes, and used by patients themselves.
5. The smartphone
It’s been eight years since the launch of these pocket-sized devices we now know so well. We
take them for granted but our phones combine: computing power that could steer a spacecraft, a
connection to the internet, a host of sensors for health-relevant data like movement and location
tracking, plus a touch-screen interface.
Apps
App stores already feature thousands of health apps, though their uptake for health and care has
been patchy. Efforts to curate the best quality apps, for example in the NHS App Library, have
had little success so far (Huckvale et al 2015).
One of the more sophisticated apps in use in health care is Ginger.io. In this depression

In the last decade the healthcare monitoring systems have drawn considerable attentions of the researchers. The prime goal was to develop a reliable patient monitoring system so that the healthcare professionals can monitor their patients, who are either hospitalized or executing their normal daily life activities. In this work we present a mobile device based wireless healthcare monitoring system that can provide real time online information about physiological conditions of a patient. Our proposed system is designed to measure and monitor important physiological data of a patient in order to accurately describe the status of her/his health and fitness. In addition the proposed system is able to send alarming message about the patient’s critical health data by text messages or by email reports. By using the information contained in the text or e-mail message the healthcare professional can provide necessary medical
advising. The system mainly consists of sensors, the data acquisition unit, microcontroller (i.e., Arduino), and software (i.e., LabVIEW). The patient’s temperature, heart beat rate, muscles, blood pressure, blood glucose level, and ECG data are monitored, displayed, and stored by our system. To ensure reliability and accuracy the proposed system has been field tested. The test results show that our system is able to measure the patient’s physiological data with a very high accuracy.

The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Wearable technology has grown up since the first FitBit was introduced in 2009 to watch
your heart and count steps. More specialized health monitoring is available from the
current generation of wearable tech.

Most people today have some kind of smartwatch or wristband that can track your steps,
measure your heart rate, and measure your BMI. But there are also ECG monitors that
detect atrial fibrillation and blood pressure monitors that can record your data and send
reports to your doctor.

3. Telehealth Helps More People Access Care
In fact the greatest technological advancement that has improved access to care for people
in rural areas is telehealth.
Telehealth takes advantage of electronic information and telecommunications techs like
videoconferencing, streaming media, remote imaging, and others. They are useful for
long-distance patient and clinician contact, care, advice, education, and more.
The Department of Veterans Affairs is also one of many that use telehealth to deliver
service to patients.
“The VA is using telehealth on a pretty regular basis,” She offers her father as an example
of a telehealth beneficiary.
The VA provides her father with an internet-connected scale to weigh himself. He steps on
this scale, and he doesn’t even have to write down his weight. It automatically goes into
his record at the VA.
So the scale does everything for him without errors. There are no diagnostic errors,
documentation errors, medication errors. Obviously, errors in health care are a big issue
and they have been for many years. But that eliminates with connected devices like this
scale.
4. Electronic Health Records Streamline Care
Medical records used to be all about stacks of paper in overstrained manila folders.
Everything needed to find its way into that file, or there could be severe consequences.
Switching doctors also meant carrying files to your new provider.
Without complete medical records, patients faced disruption of the continuity of care.
They would risk overmedication, under medication, missing diagnoses, or serious effects
from pharmaceutical allergies. Consequences could span from unexpected hospital stays
all the way to death. Now, electronic health records (EHRs) are decreasing that danger.

EHRs mean patient records can be stored and managed online, which speeds up
recordkeeping and transferring, streamlines everyday processes, and also maximizes work
efficiency. The electronic health record enables a level of continuity of care that was
unprecedented in the days of paper charts.’
Underpinning this system is internet-connected devices and apps. The platforms, apps,
and wearable devices are wonderful, but if they’re not connected, then it really doesn’t
