Principle of FACTS
• FACTS is defined by IEEE as “ A power electronic
based system and other static equipment that
provide control of one or more AC transmission
system parameters to enhance controllability and
increase power transfer capability ”.
• FACTS is a collection of controllers.
• FACTS helps to improve power enhancement
capability.
• FACTS can control series impedance, shunt
impedance, current, voltage, phase angle etc.
• FACTS is made from high power transistor or
thyristor.
• FACTS have high reliability of switching.
Benefits of FACTS
• FACTS is economical technology.
• All the FACTS controllers can be use with existing
AC transmission system.
• FACTS technology allows greater throughput over
existing routes.
• FACTS can be use on existing transmission routes
without construction of new transmission lines.
• Reducing power loss and increasing power transfer
capability.
• Increase the security by raising transient stability
limit .
• Limit short circuit current and overloads.
• Provide secure tie line connections to neighboring
utilities.
• Voltage regulating speed is fast.
• Reduce reactive power flow with increasing active
power flow.
