CALIBAN AS SUBALTERN :
• Name :- Divya d. Vaghela
• Roll no :- 07
• Semester :- 03
• Batch :- 2018-20
• Paper no :- 11
• Paper’s name :- The postcolonial literature
• Email ID :- vaghela.divya230@gmail.com
• Submitted to :- Department of English ,MKBU
THE TEMPEST :-
• Written by William Shakespeare.
• Probably written in 1610-1611.
• Play plays the role of his discourse of
colonialism.
• Prospero,a complex and contradictory
character.
• Lives on island with his daughter and two
servants ; Caliban and Ariel.
A TEMPEST :-
• Written by Aime Cesaire.
• It is an adaption of Shakespeare’s play ‘The
Tempest ’.
• It was a postcolonial revision of William
Shakespeare.
• Focus on issues like race, power and
decolonization.
•
• The story set on a island.
CONTINUE..............
• Aime Cesaire used all the characters from Shakespeare’s version but he specifies that ;
• Prospero – White master
• Ariel – Mulato
• Caliban – Black slave
• Here slave raises his voice against master.
• Aime Cesaire gives rebirth or justification of the voiceless or Marginalized character from ‘
The Tempest ‘. She given voice to them.
CALIBAN OF THE TEMPEST :-
• Son of Sycorax.
• Real native of the island.
• Savage and deformed slave.
• Less resistance and uses prospero’s
language.
CALIBAN :-
• Caliban having no power .
• Having no language.
• Presented as colonial Caliban .
• Presented as more brutal and as monster.
• Symbolised as primitive humanity.
• His enslavement is because of his own character.
CALIBAN OF A TEMPEST
• Son of witch Sycorax.
• Half human,half monster.
• Caliban is a black slave.
• Servant of prospero.
• Caliban is one of the hungry ideas ,he is
always looking for someone to word him
into being.
CONTINUE.................
• Caliban was the ruler of the island before prospero’s arrival.
• Raises voice against his white master prospero.
• Expressed his thought more emotionally and descriptively.
• Alienation from his own identity.
• Journey to gain freedom under prospero’s rule.
• Having power and language.
• Presented as colonial with more aggression.
• Enslavement caused by their race.
MEANING OF SUBALTERN :-
• A subaltern is someone with a low ranking in a social, political or other hierarchy. It
can also mean someone who has been marginalized or oppressed.Subaltern occupy
entry level jobs or occupy a lower rung of the ‘ Corporate ladder ’.
• Here we will see Caliban as a subaltern and also Eklavya as a subaltern.
CALIBAN AS A SUBALTERN :-
• Here character of Caliban we can say as Subaltern.
• He is representing kind of subaltern identity.
• He was a black slave.
• Have no power or voice.
• He has to obey his master.
• He can’t rebel against master.
• Behind these all things power played a vital role in our society.
EKLAVYA AS A SUBALTERN :-
• He was a Nishdha boy.
• Belong to lower class.
• Because of low cast he can’t get education from Guru Dronacharya.
• He was good or smarter than Arjun yet he can’t learn Archery because of lower
class.
• Same as Caliban he doesn’t have any power or voice, he doesn’t rebel or go
against his GURU.
• He never learn Archery from Guru Dronacharya yet,he has to pay his right hand’s
thumb as Gurudakshina
SUMMING UP :-
• At conclude I want to say that ‘A Tempest ’ by Aime Cesaire is a play
largely based on Shakespeare’s ‘ The Tempest ’ with only a few
changes.
• We can say that here Eklavya and Caliban are presented as
Subaltern because there are someone who ruling them by the power.
If there are rulers then obviously the subaltern or servant for serve to
them.

It can also mean someone who has been marginalized or oppressed.Subaltern occupy entry level jobs or occupy a lower rung of the ‘ Corporate ladder ’. • Here we will see Caliban as a subaltern and also Eklavya as a subaltern.
  • 10. CALIBAN AS A SUBALTERN :- • Here character of Caliban we can say as Subaltern. • He is representing kind of subaltern identity. • He was a black slave. • Have no power or voice. • He has to obey his master. • He can’t rebel against master. • Behind these all things power played a vital role in our society.

EKLAVYA AS A SUBALTERN :- • He was a Nishdha boy. • Belong to lower class. • Because of low cast he can’t get education from Guru Dronacharya. • He was good or smarter than Arjun yet he can’t learn Archery because of lower class. • Same as Caliban he doesn’t have any power or voice, he doesn’t rebel or go against his GURU. • He never learn Archery from Guru Dronacharya yet,he has to pay his right hand’s thumb as Gurudakshina
  • 12. SUMMING UP :- • At conclude I want to say that ‘A Tempest ’ by Aime Cesaire is a play largely based on Shakespeare’s ‘ The Tempest ’ with only a few changes. • We can say that here Eklavya and Caliban are presented as Subaltern because there are someone who ruling them by the power. If there are rulers then obviously the subaltern or servant for serve to them.
