2. Introduction
• Mumps is acute viral infection of childhood
that typically involves swelling of one or
both parotid glands, although many other
organs can be affected.
• Incubation period is 14-24 days
3. Etiology/Cause
• Mumps virus causes mumps
• It is a RNA virus
• belongs to Rubulavirus genus and
paramyxovirus family
• Its only one serotype is known
5. Epidermiology
• Mumps is endemic in most unvaccinated
populations
• It spreads from human reservoir by-
a) direct contact
b) air borne droplets like
sneezing ,coughing
c) formites contaminated by saliva
d) possibly by urine too
6. Pathogenesis
• Enter body via nasal or oral route by air
droplets, eg- sneezing,coughing or direct
contact
• Replicate in nasopharynx and regional
lymph node
• Infects the blood
• Goes to different organs including parotid
glands
8. Diagnosis
• Isolation of virus from saliva, urine ,csf ,etc
then RT-PCR to detect it
• Serological test to detect Igm, IgG
• Differential diagnosis for-
a) Bacterial parotids
b) Parotid tumor
c) Parotid duct stone
10. Treatment
• Bed rest and drink plenty of fluid
• Symptomatic treatment-
1) For fever and pain ,antipyrectics are
given like paracetamol, ibuprofen
11. Prevention
• Maintain proper hygiene
• Stay away from infected persons and use
mask
• Vaccination of MMR(mumps,measles and
rubella virus)-
-1st dose at 12-15 months of age of
child and 2nd at 4-6 years of age
