Talk about The Teachers’ Lab - from BrochureAt The Teachers’ Lab, we are exploring a variety of ways in which effective teaching can happen. We are really interested in challenging the status quo and evaluating new models of schooling. We want to create a space where teachers question what they know about learning and teaching, observe themselves, and learn by doing ,Essentially, we are looking at the development of a new kind of teacher. Why is this important?------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------So let us first look at the schooling as we know it today. Why is it that we send our kids to school? We want them to learn, to think in order to eventually get a job. So, schools are designed to fulfill this.
98 % of all children are Enrolled in Schools in Tamil Nadu
This is the number of 2nd standard children who CANNOT read books designed for their age level
33 % of 8th students who cannot read that same second standard text.
- So by the time they get to college94% of graduates are unemployable in their respective fields. ( In Tamil Nadu we have 600 Engineering Colleges and only 8% of its graduates are employable) (IT: as low as 1 in every 200 in Chennai is EMPLOYABLE)
Obviously our children do not have the choice to make their schooling count.In order to understand what is meaningful for children, let us look at 3 kinds of learning environments.
Most of us have studied in this kind of classroom.
And then some of us, in this kind.

After both clippings are shown:From our observations we have seen that children who spend their schooling years in classrooms such as these are: have not only achieved essential levels of literacy and numeracy by a very young age but also show signs of directing their own learning by the time they are in their elementary years such environments actively encourage their curiosity and create the space and time to act on it without the teacher explicitly talking about the importance of sharing, caring and cooperation, the child gets a direct appreciation of these values and skills. When a child takes a material and then puts it back, he ensures that another can use it - SharingWhen a child wants to work on the same material that another is working on, she waits her turn – WaitingWhen the children have to clean their classroom everyday, they learn that they have to care for and be responsible for the materials they use. Due to the mixed age group setting, an older child – without being told to do so - may naturally ‘teach’ or ‘work along with’ a younger one thereby exercising care, developing skills of cooperation and revising his own learning.
The Two Year Teaching Fellowship requires you to fulfill one year of training. The Training cost for the Pre Primary Teaching Fellowship is approximately 35000/year and Rs 75000/year for the Elementary Teaching Fellowship. However, to aid you during this training period, TTL will provide a stipend of Rs.5000 for the Pre Primary Teaching Fellowship and Rs. 8000 for the Elementary Teaching Fellowship.
