Technical services, Design and Projects.

Projects Handled:
• Urea Debottlenecking project ( UDP):
Urea plant revamping to increase capacity from 1500 MTPD to 2300
MTPD . This revamp included three projects namely
1.CO2 Recovery plant from reformer flue gases based on MHI,Japan
technology.
2. Urea plant modifications based on license from Urea Casale,Switzerland.
and
3. Granulation unit based on UFT, Germany technology.
Carried out Feasibility study, FEED & detail engineering with
process licensors.
During FEED ,responsible for Process Design Basis, Development &
review of PIDs , PFDs ,Heat & mass balance, Process description &
Operating philosophy, Review of design and datasheets of equipments
and machineries, Review of instrumentation (including control & trip
logic diagrams ) and electrical aspects. Carried out in-house utilities
concept study.
1. Participated in Hazop , HSEIA reviews & SIMOPS during FEED , Detail
Engg. & Construction & suggested many changes in the process,
equipment, piping, instrumentation & design based on operating
experience.
Provided technical assistance in all engineering issues and codes &
standards with particular reference to process engineering.
July-2007- Sept 2008- Involved in Detail engineering of above units with
EPC Contractor. Detail engineering completed by Sept. 2008.

Commissioned the revamped plant & carried out trouble shooting of many
technical & contractual issues & implemented many modifications
for the safe & efficient plant operation.

Performance test runs completed & project handed over to the Plant.
• Interfacing with Melamine project :
80,000 MT per annum Melamine plant was to be set up by ADNOC which
was to be interfaced with FERTIL UDP project for feedstock and utilities.
This interfacing was also handled by our project team. AMI & Atofina
processes were reviewed. PDP & FEED carried out for AMI process.
However this project is now cancelled, as it is being set up somewhere
else.
• Worked in coordination with MASDAR for completing necessary
documentation to get carbon credit as per Kyoto protocol for C-reduction.
• FERTIL-2-Expansion:
New Ammonia /Urea expansion – Installation of 2000 MTPD Ammonia
and 3500 MTPD urea plant with associated utilities facilities. Developed
scope of work and carried out technical and economic feasibility.
Preparation of Technical Terms of Reference (TTOR) for inviting LEPC
bids by Jacobs Consultants, USA.
Bids received, Technical evaluation completed. LEPC project awarded
to Uhde ,Germany and Samsung Engineering, S.Korea Consortium.
It is 1.2 Billion US$ project and project has been completed ,
commissioned & operating successfully.
• Feasibility Study / Basic engineering done for the following
projects.
1. Installation of 4 bar –Absorber unit in Urea plant to reduce
ammonia emissions.
2. Revamping of desorption / hydrolyser section in Urea plant.
3. HPC section study / revamping study by UOP in Ammonia
plant. HPC towers packings replacement with IMTP type.
• CO2 Compressor suction cooling project:
1. Carried out performance evaluation of compressor’s existing
operation.
2. Effects of cooling on compressor's head and power and
preparing feasibility study.
3. Preparing equipment specification sheets, process and
instrument diagram and process flow diagram, Technical bids
evaluation, installation and commissioning of the system.
• Plants Integrity studies.
Carried out ammonia and urea plants integrity studies with the help of
process licensers. This included process equipments performance,
remaining life calculation, piping velocities review and heat and
material balances at high operating loads & plant’s safety issues.
• Benchmarking study of FERTIL Plants.
Carried out ammonia and urea plants bench marking studies with the
GCC and Rest of the world plants with the help of consultants.
• Upgrading of TDC-2000 system to TDC 3000 by M/s. Honeywell.
Prepared Graphics / custom displays and handled technical issues.
• Upgrading of BFW treatment system for high quality boiler feed
water. Changed BFW specification for boilers.
• Energy-water production from thermal heat recovery by
Xenesys,Japan.
• Prepared standard operating procedures for the plants.
• Team Leader of Taskforce for identification & reduction of firewater
usage from Network.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE :
• From 1976 to 1982 , worked as Shift Engineer (Urea) at IFFCO , Kalol,
India . in 1200 MTPD urea plant based on Stamicarbon’s CO2 stripping
technology, included Reciprocating and Centrifugal compressors,
Reciprocating pumps, electronic controllers etc.
• From Nov.1982, Joined FERTIL during project stage ,worked with Urea
process licensers M/S Stamicarbon.
• Commissoned 1500 MTPD Urea Plant, with TDC-2000/TDC 3000, and
MUVAC control (Multi Variable Advance Control) design in 1983 . Worked
as Shift Supervisor (Urea & Utility) till September,1992.
• From Sept.1992 : Transferred to Technical Services Department,
Coordinated project works.
The complex consisting of 1,000 MTPD of ammonia and 1,500 MTPD of
urea plants was designed and constructed by Chiyoda Corporation of
Japan, based on the technology, license and know-how of :
• Haldor Topsoe A/s, Denmark ( Ammonia )
• Benfield Corporation, USA ( CO2 Removal )
• Costain Engineering, UK ( Hydrogen Recovery )
• Stamicarbon b.v, Netharlands ( Urea )
The construction of the plant began in 1980 and the complex was
commissioned by the end of 1983.
• Process Engineering experience :
Proficient & hands-on experience in Process Engineering calculations
viz., heat and material balance calculations for process/equipments
Pump's NPSH/head/power calculations, piping pressure drop calculations,
orifice/control valve sizing, boiler's and furnace combustion efficiency
calculations, heat exchangers performance calculations and Catalysts
performance /Approach to equilibrium calculations. Preparation of data
sheets for new equipments, like pumps, control valves and line sizing.
• Performance evaluation of compressors & turbines for efficiency and
power
• Providing Process engineering support to Operating plants. Suggested
and carried out many minor / major modifications in the plant to improve
the safety, reliability, productivity and profitability of the plant. Also
responsible for trouble-shooting of the plant problems.
• Monthly / Daily production report preparation, utilities and raw materials
production /consumption performance analysis, Summary report for
Management information, Steam / water balance checks, Production loss
analysis and utilities optimization, Daily review of plant operating
conditions. Inventory control / stock verification for Ammonia / urea
storage.
• Proposals for improving profitability and operating cost reduction. Working
in close coordination with Laboratory for effluents, emissions control and
product quality control, technical analysis of Lab results.
• Hazop review for plant modifications & process operations. Member of the
Plant Modification Team and also of Hazop Committee. Actively
participated in HAZID in the FEED stage.
• Developed In -house software programs for day -to-day calculations.
• Plant's Safety Analysis & Reliability Study carried out in-house.
Conducting Process Audits & improving process efficiencies.
From April-2002 to Oct-2003 : Worked as Shift Controller :
Assumes overall control of the plant, outside the normal working hours and
during holidays. Leads, directs and coordinates operational activities in shifts
of all the plants / sections comprising Ammonia, Urea, Utilities, Product
Handling & Shipping, Jetty, Safety & Security and Maintenance. Ensures that
the defined operating parameters are complied without violation of safety
norms and optimal operating conditions. Reports to Plant Manager on the
performance of the various units. Communicates & coordinates with
concerned Departments Managers.
Since 2003 : Working in Projects division:
• New projects & de-bottlenecking projects handling. Making techno-
economic feasibility studies, basic engineering design, PIDs and
PFDs preparation, technical bids evaluation. Communication and
clarifications during various phases of project. Provides design basis
& statement of requirements (SOR ) for various projects.
• To ensure all work carried out conforms with agreed codes and
practices, meets all requirements of the contracts specification and
ensure all work is carried out within agreed schedules, budgets and
procedures.
• Liaison and co-ordination with other engineers and discipline groups
on the contract to effect timely production of deliverables.
• Preparation of input into the contract documents for each discipline
area, including design criteria, scope of work, procedures and design
approach.
• Manage studies and process related projects as assigned.
• Responsible for reviewing and approving process related calculations,
documents and reports. Supervises the Process Engineers of the
PMC Team.
• Reviewing & verifying Design criteria , Design basis, process
calculations, PFDs, P&IDs, material balance , datasheets, simulation
reports, process guarantees, commissioning procedures, operating
manuals, etc.
• Participates in process design review meetings and advises the
Project Manager/Director regarding key process decisions.
• Actively coordinates and participates in HAZID & HAZOP review
during various stages of Projects.
• Works closely with EPC Contractor to resolve any existing or
forecasted problems related to process discipline.
• Review of vendor's drawings & data sheets
• Commissioning & Guarantee testing of De-bottlenecked / New
plants.
• Follow-up the technical issues related to design/technology &
operations after the projects implementation. Laison with Technology/
process licensors & Vendors/ Suppliers for various problems &
technical issues.

  • 5. Projects Handled: • Urea Debottlenecking project ( UDP): Urea plant revamping to increase capacity from 1500 MTPD to 2300 MTPD . This revamp included three projects namely 1.CO2 Recovery plant from reformer flue gases based on MHI,Japan technology. 2. Urea plant modifications based on license from Urea Casale,Switzerland. and 3. Granulation unit based on UFT, Germany technology. Carried out Feasibility study, FEED & detail engineering with process licensors. During FEED ,responsible for Process Design Basis, Development & review of PIDs , PFDs ,Heat & mass balance, Process description & Operating philosophy, Review of design and datasheets of equipments and machineries, Review of instrumentation (including control & trip logic diagrams ) and electrical aspects. Carried out in-house utilities concept study. 1. Participated in Hazop , HSEIA reviews & SIMOPS during FEED , Detail Engg. & Construction & suggested many changes in the process, equipment, piping, instrumentation & design based on operating experience. Provided technical assistance in all engineering issues and codes & standards with particular reference to process engineering. July-2007- Sept 2008- Involved in Detail engineering of above units with EPC Contractor. Detail engineering completed by Sept. 2008. Detail Engg. ; 1. Piping sizing, Pumps hydraulics. 2. Preparation of inquiry specifications, 3. Technical evaluation of Vendor offers for process items. 4. Review of vendor documents. Construction completed by Sept-2009 and projects successfully commissioned by Nov. 2009. Commissioned the revamped plant & carried out trouble shooting of many technical & contractual issues & implemented many modifications for the safe & efficient plant operation. Commissioning : 2. Identification & preparation of flushing / pre commissioning & commissioning loops 3. Division into systems & sub-systems. 4. Preparations of commissioning procedures. Total project cost is about 250 Million $. Worked with Consultants & Licensers & Vendors Performance test runs completed & project handed over to the Plant. • Interfacing with Melamine project : 80,000 MT per annum Melamine plant was to be set up by ADNOC which was to be interfaced with FERTIL UDP project for feedstock and utilities. This interfacing was also handled by our project team. AMI & Atofina processes were reviewed. PDP & FEED carried out for AMI process. However this project is now cancelled, as it is being set up somewhere else. • Worked in coordination with MASDAR for completing necessary documentation to get carbon credit as per Kyoto protocol for C-reduction.
  • 6. • FERTIL-2-Expansion: New Ammonia /Urea expansion – Installation of 2000 MTPD Ammonia and 3500 MTPD urea plant with associated utilities facilities. Developed scope of work and carried out technical and economic feasibility. Preparation of Technical Terms of Reference (TTOR) for inviting LEPC bids by Jacobs Consultants, USA. Bids received, Technical evaluation completed. LEPC project awarded to Uhde ,Germany and Samsung Engineering, S.Korea Consortium. It is 1.2 Billion US$ project and project has been completed , commissioned & operating successfully. • Feasibility Study / Basic engineering done for the following projects. 1. Installation of 4 bar –Absorber unit in Urea plant to reduce ammonia emissions. 2. Revamping of desorption / hydrolyser section in Urea plant. 3. HPC section study / revamping study by UOP in Ammonia plant. HPC towers packings replacement with IMTP type. • CO2 Compressor suction cooling project: 1. Carried out performance evaluation of compressor’s existing operation. 2. Effects of cooling on compressor's head and power and preparing feasibility study. 3. Preparing equipment specification sheets, process and instrument diagram and process flow diagram, Technical bids evaluation, installation and commissioning of the system. • Plants Integrity studies. Carried out ammonia and urea plants integrity studies with the help of process licensers. This included process equipments performance, remaining life calculation, piping velocities review and heat and material balances at high operating loads & plant’s safety issues. • Benchmarking study of FERTIL Plants. Carried out ammonia and urea plants bench marking studies with the GCC and Rest of the world plants with the help of consultants. • Upgrading of TDC-2000 system to TDC 3000 by M/s. Honeywell. Prepared Graphics / custom displays and handled technical issues. • Upgrading of BFW treatment system for high quality boiler feed water. Changed BFW specification for boilers. • Energy-water production from thermal heat recovery by Xenesys,Japan. • Prepared standard operating procedures for the plants. • Team Leader of Taskforce for identification & reduction of firewater usage from Network.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE : • From 1976 to 1982 , worked as Shift Engineer (Urea) at IFFCO , Kalol, India . in 1200 MTPD urea plant based on Stamicarbon’s CO2 stripping technology, included Reciprocating and Centrifugal compressors, Reciprocating pumps, electronic controllers etc. • From Nov.1982, Joined FERTIL during project stage ,worked with Urea process licensers M/S Stamicarbon. • Commissoned 1500 MTPD Urea Plant, with TDC-2000/TDC 3000, and MUVAC control (Multi Variable Advance Control) design in 1983 . Worked as Shift Supervisor (Urea & Utility) till September,1992. • From Sept.1992 : Transferred to Technical Services Department, Coordinated project works. The complex consisting of 1,000 MTPD of ammonia and 1,500 MTPD of urea plants was designed and constructed by Chiyoda Corporation of Japan, based on the technology, license and know-how of : • Haldor Topsoe A/s, Denmark ( Ammonia ) • Benfield Corporation, USA ( CO2 Removal ) • Costain Engineering, UK ( Hydrogen Recovery ) • Stamicarbon b.v, Netharlands ( Urea ) The construction of the plant began in 1980 and the complex was commissioned by the end of 1983. • Process Engineering experience : Proficient & hands-on experience in Process Engineering calculations viz., heat and material balance calculations for process/equipments Pump's NPSH/head/power calculations, piping pressure drop calculations, orifice/control valve sizing, boiler's and furnace combustion efficiency calculations, heat exchangers performance calculations and Catalysts performance /Approach to equilibrium calculations. Preparation of data sheets for new equipments, like pumps, control valves and line sizing. • Performance evaluation of compressors & turbines for efficiency and power • Providing Process engineering support to Operating plants. Suggested and carried out many minor / major modifications in the plant to improve the safety, reliability, productivity and profitability of the plant. Also responsible for trouble-shooting of the plant problems. • Monthly / Daily production report preparation, utilities and raw materials production /consumption performance analysis, Summary report for Management information, Steam / water balance checks, Production loss analysis and utilities optimization, Daily review of plant operating conditions. Inventory control / stock verification for Ammonia / urea storage. • Proposals for improving profitability and operating cost reduction. Working in close coordination with Laboratory for effluents, emissions control and product quality control, technical analysis of Lab results. • Hazop review for plant modifications & process operations. Member of the Plant Modification Team and also of Hazop Committee. Actively participated in HAZID in the FEED stage. • Developed In -house software programs for day -to-day calculations. • Plant's Safety Analysis & Reliability Study carried out in-house. Conducting Process Audits & improving process efficiencies.
  • 8. From April-2002 to Oct-2003 : Worked as Shift Controller : Assumes overall control of the plant, outside the normal working hours and during holidays. Leads, directs and coordinates operational activities in shifts of all the plants / sections comprising Ammonia, Urea, Utilities, Product Handling & Shipping, Jetty, Safety & Security and Maintenance. Ensures that the defined operating parameters are complied without violation of safety norms and optimal operating conditions. Reports to Plant Manager on the performance of the various units. Communicates & coordinates with concerned Departments Managers. Since 2003 : Working in Projects division: • New projects & de-bottlenecking projects handling. Making techno- economic feasibility studies, basic engineering design, PIDs and PFDs preparation, technical bids evaluation. Communication and clarifications during various phases of project. Provides design basis & statement of requirements (SOR ) for various projects. • To ensure all work carried out conforms with agreed codes and practices, meets all requirements of the contracts specification and ensure all work is carried out within agreed schedules, budgets and procedures. • Liaison and co-ordination with other engineers and discipline groups on the contract to effect timely production of deliverables. • Preparation of input into the contract documents for each discipline area, including design criteria, scope of work, procedures and design approach. • Manage studies and process related projects as assigned. • Responsible for reviewing and approving process related calculations, documents and reports. Supervises the Process Engineers of the PMC Team. • Reviewing & verifying Design criteria , Design basis, process calculations, PFDs, P&IDs, material balance , datasheets, simulation reports, process guarantees, commissioning procedures, operating manuals, etc. • Participates in process design review meetings and advises the Project Manager/Director regarding key process decisions. • Actively coordinates and participates in HAZID & HAZOP review during various stages of Projects. • Works closely with EPC Contractor to resolve any existing or forecasted problems related to process discipline. • Review of vendor's drawings & data sheets • Commissioning & Guarantee testing of De-bottlenecked / New plants. • Follow-up the technical issues related to design/technology & operations after the projects implementation. Laison with Technology/ process licensors & Vendors/ Suppliers for various problems & technical issues.
