Causes and Consequences of Teenage Pregnancy in Tanzania: Case Study Research Design
1. Pregnant Students Are Barred From School In Sub-saharan Africa
TEENAGE PREGNANCY IN TANZANIA: CAUSES, CHALLENGES AND CONSEQUENCES
Teenage pregnancy is prevalent in Africa, it has also been reported to be a public health
issue (United Nations Population Fund, 2013). In order to get in-depth knowledge about
this issue, researching the causes, challenges, and consequences of teenage pregnancy in
Tanzania seems more interesting. Therefore, we have decided to use Case Study as a
methodology to investigate this issue.
2. Research Design/Methodology
Case Study is in-depth examinations of a
person or groups of people.
Is good for describing, comparing,
evaluating and understanding different
aspects of a research issue.
Case study is appropriate in this study
because this study is set out to get a
detailed information about specific
problematic phenomenon (teenage
pregnancy) in the society. Also, because
this study seek to carry out intensive and
systematic investigation while examining in-
depth data relating to several variables in
the context of teenage pregnancy
Research Questions:
What are the causes of teenage pregnancy in Tanzania?
What are the challenges faced by pregnant students in
Tanzania?
What are the consequences of teenage pr
3. Sampling and Sampling Technique
Purposive sampling
It's applicable when you're interested in a certain category or group
of people for a specific reason. It also helps to reduce the variation
in data to get focused results. For example, we are interested
in specifically teenage pregnant students, not just any student.
Participants: Teenage girls between
the age of 13-17 years that are
pregnant or already a mother through
NGOs, Social Centers
and counseling centers.
Educational Stakeholders (School Aut
horities, Teachers and
Policymakers).
Ethical Issues: This study is quite
sensitive due to the Stigmatization of
this certain group of people. In order
to yield solutions, pregnant
teenagers are important participants
in this research as they
have experiences and suggestions
to share. We would ensure
that pregnant teenagers are
given sufficient information about
the research process so they can give
informed voluntary consent
to participate.
Potential Risk of Participating:
Emotional and mental Distress of the
participants.
4. Data Collection Methods
Focus Group Discussion
A focus group discussion will be used in
this study because it will allow the
researchers to collect and generate a
variety of explanations and responses from
research participants. That is, the focus
group will enable this study to collect rich
and comprehensive data from participants
while also giving research participants the
confidence to share their responses.
Interview
Semi-Structured In-depth Interviews
The interview method of data collection is
suitable for this study
because it allows research participants to
properly explain,
answer, and explore the research
questions raised in the study,
resulting in appropriate and adequate
responses.
P.S. Data will be collected through notes
taking and
audio recordings.
Secondary data
Document Analysis (policy documents).
