1. Treatment Sheet
The magazine that I am aiming to create is a rock magazine focused on new age
music – it will have an almost grungy feel to it, as a lot of the people questioned
also stated that they also liked metal. The magazine will be aimed towards older
teens to young adults, this is due to the music choice along with the average
person who would buy a magazine; the people who would be most likely to buy
music magazines are teens – and the music theme is also very popular amongst
them at this moment. There are a few magazines that are already taking this type
of theme, but the market for them isn’t completely saturated, there is still space
for a new magazine as long as it does something different.
With my magazine, I aim to stand out by showing lesser-known artists (along
with a popular headline artist), but my magazine will ac as a way for lesser
known artists and groups to be heard about. Not may magazines go down this
route due to the fact that people sometimes wont buy magazines if they don’t
know much about the artists inside, but if it done well enough I will be able to
succeed at drawing people in whilst keeping the artists new. Many magazines
come to mind when thinking of the rock concept (Kerrang, Classic Rock, NME,
etc), but it is hard to think of a magazine dedicated to smaller artists – it will at
least be a good concept that may interest people enough for them to buy it.
The magazine’s name is a very important aspect when it comes to how it looks,
how it catches the reader’s eye, and just generally how it comes across. For that
reason I have thought hard about naming it and come to the conclusion that it
must do three things: give the reader some idea about what the magazine is
trying to do, fit with the overarching theme, and seem catchy. I have opted to
name my magazine Breakout. This name gets the message across of the
magazine smoothly, without seeming forced really – ‘Breakout’ brings the idea
across of ‘breakout stars’, making the magazine look like a sort of launch-pad for
artists to try and get known.
