Editor's Notes
Teachers will be given this at the beginning of the training and rate themselves at the beginning of the PD, using the sentence stem, “I am a level ___ because…” and will reflect back on this at the end of the PD knowing that a level 3 is the expectation.
Make a note about setting the students up for success. Schools have an obligation to level the playing field for all learners.
Explain the goals and how targeting the needs of all learners and diversity within our school
Link will take them to a padlet reflecting on why we use technology (level 1 on the scale) to model this application and help them to reflect on the learning goal and progression for this PD
Tie to common core standard (W.2.6 – to support interaction and collaboration with others, using tech to produce / share writing

Variety of ways to use this to support learning and students at varying levels.
One of the major advantages of technology is that it widens the variety of formative assessments classroom teachers are able to utilize. These different technologies allow to teachers to quickly assess students while they are learning. This immediate feedback allows the teacher to address the needs of the entire class or individual students who might be struggling with a certain topic or concept. Different tools today, such as Kahoot allow teachers to create quick quizzes that students can answer using their mobile devices. Results are anonymous to the other classmates, but feedback is immediate to the student. Another tool, such as Zaption allows a teacher to input pop up captions onto a video the students may be watching to periodically check for understanding. This allows teachers to emphasize certain points or get an understaning of student comprehension. Furthermore, applications such as Plickers, or even classroom clickers, allow teachers to create quick quizzes or polls that students may answer using their mobile devices as clickers. Again, results are anonymous but teachers are able to get an understanding of where reteaching needs to occur.
There are other, more curriculum-based technologies that can be used for formative assessment purposes. Programs like SuccessMaker can be used for both reading and math to assess a baseline understanding for students. This gives teachers an opportunity to see their diverse populations and begin to make a plan for these diverse learners wherever they may be struggling. Another program, geared more for secondary students, is Achieve3000. The baseline assessment for this program allows teachers to see the specific needs of the students as the results end up being the students true lexile levels. While these programs can also be used as a differentiation tool, their periodic assessment results are extremely helpful for language arts and math teachers trying to consistently address the needs of their diverse student population. The results of these many programs allows teachers to see the bigger picture for each student to try to close the achievement gaps among their student population. One last example of a curriculum-based technology is DataDirector. While it can be utilized as an assessment scanner similar to a scantron, it has the capability of being a crucial tool for formative assessments if used to its true potential. In Leon County, common subject area teachers and coaches have put their heads and talents together and have created a multitude of common assessments to be given to all Leon County students in certain windows. For instance, Civics students take a baseline, a mid-year and a spring diagnostic test. Results are given for each student, broken down by state standards that are assessed. It is immediate, which standards need to be retaught, which standards the students have down perfect and a school is able to compare their student’s success to the county averages. This is also incredibly helpful for administrators to use as a visual of course success.
Teachers will be given this at the beginning of the training and rate themselves at the beginning of the PD, using the sentence stem, “I am a level ___ because…” and will reflect back on this at the end of the PD knowing that a level 3 is the expectation.
As federal expectations change and state standards begin to evolve, the integration of technology becomes more crucial. Legislation holds that schools must begin integrating technology into student’s daily life while integrating state standards and curriculum. As society moves towards a technologically dominant place, it is crucial that teachers begin to develop these skills in their students. Utilizing technology to achieve educational goals begins to introduce a student to the many positive uses of technology. Teaching technological etiquette along with state standards ensures that we do not just develop the educational needs of the child but also give them the skills they need to be successful, competitive adults in the new century.
