2. Location
In my music video the feature location was the beach. I found that from my
research that a lot of indie music videos use locations in nature and outdoors.
For example the music video for Holocene by Bon Iver uses the sea and
Runaway by AURORA. I chose to conform to this convention as it created a
good atmosphere and matched well with the style of music as it is quite calm. I
also used this across all three products and therefore it was important to use it
in my video as from my research I found that it is important to use continuity to
make it recognisable.
For my second location I took inspiration from other music videos such as Brazil
by Declan Mckenna and Pompeii by Bastille By using brick buildings and walls
in the mise en scene. It conforms to the indie genre as they are commonly
filmed in towns and cities and follow locations that are seen in day to day life
opposed to brightly coloured studios. This also helps reflect the music as it is
realistic which shows how the indie genre tries to represent reality including both
global issues such as politics and also individual issues.
3. For the third location for my music video I used a stage with
coloured lighting. This is a typical convention of indie music videos
for example Electric Love by BORNS and also There's A Honey by
Pale Waves I used this for the main performance element of my
music video and I chose it because of the simple background and
the use of coloured lighting. This is also often seen in indie pop
videos as it helps embrace the pop side of the genre. I chose the
specific pink lighting as it contrasts with the blue grey tones of the
other scenes.
4. Camera distances, angles and movement
I used establishing shots throughout the beach locations as it aided the
cinematography, helped set the scene and also added to the aesthetic quality
of the video. From my research I found that this is conventional of other indie
music videos such as No Woman by Whitney and also other genres such as
pop with the music video For You by Liam payne and Rita Ora. Therefore I
chose to conform to this convention because it adds a wider variety of shots
making the video more interesting and therefore helps in maintaining audience
interest. For this specific shot I also used a panning movement which made the
establishing shot seem more panoramic. This is also a convention used in other
indie videos and helped add variety.
Another thing I used was low angle shots. This makes the performer appear to be above the
audience giving the impression they are looking up to him and he is superior. While this is not
an overly typical convention of indie music videos it is often seen in pop and RโnโB music
videos. For example Tip Toe by jason Derulo I used this convention as not only did it add
variety to my shots it also helped show the location more and give the audience a different
perspective of the artist.
5. I used a lot of close ups in my videos because as it is performance
based, it decreases the proximity between the artist and the
audience which helps them build an image of the artist. It also
helps them feel closer to the artist and therefore they will become
more recognisable and therefore the audience are more likely to
consume their music/videos in the future. From my research I
have found this is used in not only indie videos for example
Isombard by Declan Mckenna But also pop videos for example
Never Be The Same by Camila Cabello I also chose to use this in
my video because it adds variety to my video which will help
maintain audience interest.
6. Costume and Props
For the costuming for the beach location I chose a grey jumper and
black skinny jeans because one convention I have noticed in indie music
videos is that they often wear casual outfits. For example in Paris In The
Rain by LAUV the performer is wearing a plain white t shirt with black
trousers. It also fits with the colour scheme of the location with the grey
and neutral tones. Also for the shots in the alleyway I used a green
sweater with black skinny jeans.
For the shots on the stage location I chose to use all black clothes
including skinny jeans and a jacket. This stood out well with the
coloured lighting and made the artist the centre of attention. From my
research i have found this has been used in other indie videos such as
Super Far by Lany And also other genres such as rโnโb for example
Wicked Games by The Weeknd.
