This document provides definitions and classifications for various terms used at Vrede Textiles, a spinning and weaving factory. It defines terminology related to raw materials, yarn production processes, weaving, finished fabrics, and stock program words. Key terms defined include fiber types, yarn classifications, loom and fabric states, packaging and shipping containers, and lot numbering systems for yarns, warps, and fabrics.

Vrede Textiles Nomenclature
Words used in Vrede Textiles

Spinning factory (factory 1)
Delivery: Raw Materials and Packaging received by Vrede Textiles. Also called Delivery In.
Pallet: goods arrive on pallets.
Box: there are boxes on pallets.
Fibre Classification
Flock: compressed Bales of fibre (as offloaded from truck) eg: Y3
Carded: Fibre after carding eg: Y3
Drawn: Fibre after first draw. Fibre has not yet been mixed eg: Y3
Blended: Fibre after blending. also called Mixed. eg: 127?
Blended fibre gets a lot number.
Yarn Classification
Single: from spinning machine on comoli cheeze. Vrede Textiles makes composite yarn with plastic
and fibre components
Hollow Spindle: yarn from fancy twister
Assembled: 50tex assembled yarn
Twisted: 50t/2S twisted yarn; ie: 2 50t yarns twisted together with S twist
Warp: Yarn with about 400 ends. SS on label: means warp.
Warping: On VT's machine = sectional warping = on the drum
Beaming: Taking the warp off the drum onto a beam. Referred to as a warp.
Twist: eg B050/1/144. 1=Singles yarn; 2=assembled; 2S=twisted with S twist; 2Z=twisted with Z twist;
SS=Warp with two S twist yarns next to each other; SZ=Warp with an S, then a Z twist yarn next to
each other; ZZ=Warp with two Z twist yarns next to each other.
In the spinning a factory a warp is identified as eg B050/2S/WHT. In the weaving factory a warp is
identied with a character. eg: A warp type is B050, B is V095 or H095; C is C050; D is H095 or V095;
E is B050. A and B warps have 3296 ends; D and E warps have 2640 ends

Weaving factory (factory 2)
End: an end is each yarn on a warp.
Warp: the unwoven warp on the back of the loom
Back of loom: the unwoven warp is on the back of the loom
Front of loom: the woven warp is on the front of the loom
Greige: the woven and unfinished fabric on the front of the loom. Also called LoomState.
ChrisLom: fabric made on the loom in factory 1 is called ChrisLom fabric. It is Greige fabric.
Fabric: after the warp and weft yarns have been woven the result is fabric
Finished: the finished fabric prior to slitting
Roll: Full width fabric on a warp is called a roll of fabric.
Slit fabric: Vertical Blinds in 150m (usually) strips.
Piece: Greige fabric is slit into slit pieces.
Strip: After slitting the fabric is now in 89 or 127mm strips or Full Width (2070mm).
Carton: For the South African market 3 strips are put into a carton.
Box: For the American market 1 strip is put into a box. 10 boxes are then put into a carton.
Despatch: despatch to the weaving factory or to clients.

Stock Program Words
Delivery: goods received from outside suppliers including LTI.
WIP Issues: issues to Work in Progress including to LTI for dyeing.
WIP Receipts: sometimes WIP is stored in an intermediate form in the store, eg carded and blended
fibre. Also waste received by the store is received as a WIP Receipt.
Yarn Receipts: Receipts of boxes of yarn to the store.
The Store: refers to the Raw Materials and Yarn Finished goods store.
The VB Store: referes to the Vertical Blind finished goods store.
Warp: Delivery: delivery of warps to the weaving factory.
Warp: Weave: when we actually start weaving the warp the information is entered into the
computer. W=Weaving; V=Woven; F=Finished; S=Slit.
VB Receipts: Receipts of vertical blinds to the VB store.
Allocating: the process of allocating boxes to a despatch or to despatches.
Picking: the print out of cartons and the process of selecting the cartons prior to palletising.
Palletising: the process of putting 12 or 18 boxes together on pallets prior to a despatch.
Despatch. A number of pallets are sent in a truck as a despatch.
Loose pallet. Cartons sent on a despatch that are not palletised are called loose boxes.

S: Samples (only used when developing a new yarn type)
V: Volkman

Lot Numbers
Yarn lot number=fibre lot number. eg: WHT fibre can be used in B050, B090, B093, B125
Warp or Weft Lot Number: 4 colours together can make up a warp or weft lot number
Fabric Lot Number: The warp and weft lot numbers together make up the fabric lot number.
