3. Key aims
Bring key stakeholders (Council, healthcare, voluntary sector and citizens) together to explore
the drivers and barriers to eating and moving for good health in children and young people.
Understand the ‘web’ of factors that influence behaviour, diet and physical activity with a
focus on Nottingham City.
Help stakeholders connect to others passionateabout improving diet and physical activity in
children and create a network of stakeholders to take forward the whole system approach.
Build a system map, that explores the links between the influential factors and can inform
future workshops into where action is required; where collaboration is mostuseful, and how
we work as a system to improve health.
8. Activity 1 (10 min)

resonated with you and motivate your interest.
14. Systemsthinking
A collection of
parts that are
interdependent and
interconnected
Includes a series of
sub-systems that
influence the
broader system
Systems’ drive a
collective result
(may be +ve or -ve)
19. Unintendedconsequences
Unplanned outcomes may occur elsewhere in a system from implementing
‘solutions’ without understanding the system and it’s relationships

25. Step1: Identifyinfluentialfactors
List the factors you believe influence
childhood obesity and/or eating and
moving for good health in Nottingham
One factor per post-in note
Are there any factors that are unique to in Nottingham?
Group your factors into themes
26. Step2: Builda systemmap
Each table will look to explore 3 influential factors one of which is
provided.
Start with your chosen influential factors and explore as a group what
other factors have a direct effect on this one.
Consider the direction of the relationship between the newly identified
factors, the chosen influential factor, and each other.
33. Step2: Builda systemmap
Keep factors neutral
Factors should be measurable
i.e. not culture, planning, school
No map is perfect or complete
Utilise your shared perspectives & knowledge
39. Build the map: Combining today’s system maps into one
Mapping activity: We will be in touch to find out what
you offer in your communities and what evaluation you
have completed
Workshop 2: Prioritise and plan our actions as a system
