The locomotor system by Javier Díaz and Ángel Casado

 1. 2. THE LOCOMOTOR SYSTEM

By

Javier Díaz & Ángel Casado

 2. 3. 1.THE LOCOMOTOR SYSTEM

The locomotor system is made up of the

skeleton and musculature

 3. 4. The Skeleton

The skeleton is made up of:

Bones : they are hard and rigid organs

Joints : they are the unions between two or more bones.

Cartilage : they are more flexible than bones.

 4. 5. The Musculature

The musculature is made up of all the muscles in the body.Tendons attach muscles to the bones.

 5. 6. TYPES OF MOVEMENTS

There are two types of movements:

Voluntary movements : these movements respond to an order from the brain.

Involuntary movements : these movements respond to an order from other organs:

From the spinal cord

From the brain stem

 6. 7. 2. THE SKELETON

The skeleton is made up of all bones in the body

Important bones:

Head bones:

-Skull bones: protect the brain

-Facial bones: like the nasal cheekbones and jawbone.

 7. 9. OTHER IMPORTANT BONES

Trunk bones: there are two sections:

-The spine is made up of vertebrae that protect the spinal cord.

-The rib cage is made up of ribs and sternum. It protects the heart and lungs

 8. 11. OTHER IMPORTANTS BONES

Limb bones. they can be:

-Upper limbs: The humerus the ulna and radius.

The carpal bones: metacarpals, phalanges. The clavicle and scapula connect them to the trunk.

-Lower limbs: The femur ,tibia and fibula. The tarsal bones, metatarsal bones, phalanges. The hip connects them all to the trunk.

 9. 13. JOINTS

Fixed: these bones are joined and cannot move.

Movable: these bones can move a lot.

Semi-movable: these bones only move a little.

 10. 15. 3. MUSCULATURE

The musculature is the set of muscles in the body.

- Long muscles: like biceps

- Flat and wide muscles: like the buttock muscles.

- Round muscles: like mouth or eye muscles.

 11. 17. IMPORTANT BODY MUSCLES

Head muscles: the masseter muscles, buccinator, the orbicular muscles

Trunk muscles:

-Neck

-Front

-Back

Limb muscles:

-Upper limbs

-Lower limbs

 12. 18. TENDONS

Tendons are white fibres that connect most muscles to the bones
