  1. headspace is the national youth mental health foundation.   We provide support, guidance and information to young people (aged 12-25) who are going through difficult times. We have 30 centres around Australia (with more planned), an online counselling service eheadspace and a website packed with information and advice: headspace.org.au.   I look after social media for headspace and I utilise various social media tools to create understanding and awareness about the issues young people go through, de-stigmatise mental illness and encourage young people to seek help and support.   headspace has had great success in using Facebook to communicate with our key audiences. We have high engagement and strong and consistent growth in users. Facebook is a crucial part of all our communications activity and is the number one direct referrer to headspace.org.au   Here are my tips for how other not-for-profits can use Facebook effectively
  2. It sounds obvious but don’t do it for the sake of doing it. Think through what you want to achieve: are you using Facebook to promote events, promote products, build your brand or change behaviour?
  3. Facebook isn’t one tool - it can be used in numerous ways to help you achieve different ends.
  4. Manage risk Risk is clearly an issue when managing your profile in the social media space. What you should be asking yourself is how do we manage risk? Put in place a risk management strategy and social media policy.
  5. Reaching hard to reach audiences If you’re targeting specific communities, talk about issues that matter to them. Constantly monitor your feedback and utilise Facebook insights which provides vital information about who is using your page.

  7. Have personality The great thing about social media is that it’s about conversation and connection. Talk to your community about issues that interest you and ask them what they think.
  8. Have fun Facebook is an incredible tool that has fundamentally changed the way we connect with communities. Our community makes me laugh, surprises me and teaches me things every day. Facebook is fun.
  9. Don’t panic! Use common sense in how you manage the page. Remember you are a person and they are people too. Be polite, respectful and friendly and your community will be too.
