3. I’m Glitch, a young person from Sandwell.
I’m feeling down, angry and scared. I think I
need to speak to my parents, someone at
school or my doctor about this. They might
know someone who can help me.
4. This is the learning mentor at my school, I have
told her about how I feel and she said that Shield
might be able to help.
I think Glitch might need
a referral to Shield.
5. To refer Glitch to Shield I need to complete a pre-
CAF or a CAF part 1.
I can do this on e-CAF. If I didn’t have e-CAF
training I could send it to the ACCESS Team
instead, their address is on the Shield website.
If Glitch already had a CAF I could add a case note
saying why Glitch needs support and send this to
The Shield Project on e-CAF
6. I work at the ACCESS Team and have just received
a referral for Shield. I’ll send it over to Viki and
Claire at the project so they can assess this young
person.
7. I’m Viki, I’m the Clinical Assessor. My role is to
assess young people and find services that meet
their needs. I also meet with the young person at
the end of the process to see how their journey
has gone.
I’m Claire, I’m the Project Worker. My role is to
assess young people and find services that meet
their needs. I also check in with young people if
they have any problems accessing services.
It is important for us to know if the parents are
aware that a referral has been made.
8. We’ve received a referral for a young person
called Glitch who needs our services.
We needs to arrange a meeting with him
either at school, home or a Children’s Centre
to see what services will meet his needs.
There is only 5days from
when we receive a referral
to when we see the young
person.
9. Viki has contacted my learning mentor who
made the referral to Shield and has agreed to
speak to meet at School next week.
10. I’m Viki, I’ve come to talk to you about what
makes you feel down, angry and scared. I want to
hear about what is important to you and what you
want achieve.
Then we can agree 3 outcomes that you want to
achieve through the services provided by Shield.
After talking to Viki we have agreed 3
outcomes and I have a copy of them
to keep at home. Viki has also said
that she will keep my mentor
informed of my progress if I want her
to.
11. Glitch will be able to access his first service within
the next 15days.
All of the information that I gathered from my
meeting with him and the outcome focussed plan
with his 3 outcomes on will be available to on e-
CAF to be viewed by anyone involved with Glitch
during this process.
12. Tier 1 Services
• Therapeutic Game ‘Glitched’
• Children’s Society Telephone support
• Shield website
13. Therapeutic Game ‘Glitched’
Hi I’m Steve from a company called 3D Native. We
have designed a CBT based web game that will be
available to young people via Shield. If during their
assessment it is felt that they would benefit from
playing the game they will be given an access
code. The game involves using problem solving
skills and having the ability to deal with situations
in a successful way to proceed and make the
shield.
14. Children’s Society Telephone support
We’re Zara and Lucy from the Children’s Society.
Our role is to co-ordinate the training of 60
volunteers who will be on the end of the phone to
support young people throughout their journey
with Shield. The volunteers will also be able to
advise the young people if they are stuck in the
game or if it has bought up emotions and feelings
they need to talk about.
15. Shield website
Hi it’s me Steve again. We’ve created the shield
website alongside the Shield Workers. The
website provides a lot of information about what
Shield is, mental health, getting support and how
to refer.
We also have a facebook page and twitter
account.

17. Krunch Workshops
Hi, I’m Ed and I work for Krunch. Krunch is about
helping young people discover who they are,
what they want to be and how to get there. I will
be working with Shield to provide workshops for
young people that are designed to suit the needs
of that particular group. We can provide
workshops around, self confidence, anger,
bullying and much more.
18. Creative Therapy Groups
Hi I’m Denzil, I’m a drama therapist. I will be
working with young people in groups to address
issues of self-esteem, low moods, anger and many
more through the creative arts.
Hi I’m Alex, I’m a music therapist. I will be working
with young people in much the same way as
Denzil but my focus is on music.
19. Protective Behaviours
Hi, It’s me Claire. As well as being the Project
Worker for Shield and assessing young people I
will also be providing Protective Behaviours. This
is a practical approach to improving personal
safety. We will be using Protective behaviours to
empower young people to feel safer. Through fun
and engaging activities young people will be
equipped with the strategies to identify and
manage risk.
21. 1:1 CounsellingHi I’m Claire Bates, I’m the counsellor for Shield. I
will be working with those young people who
need more intensive 1:1 support, for instance if
someone needs bereavement counselling then
Viki or Claire will refer them onto me.
There will also be more counsellors working with
Shield along the way.
22. Children’s Society B:Well programme
Hi, It’s Zara and Lucy again from the Children’s
Society. The B:well programme offers intensive
support. The programme has been developed by
mental health professionals and based upon CBT,
occupational and relational therapies. It focuses
on managing mental health, self-care, living skills,
social networks, relationships, addictive
behaviour, and identity amongst other things.
23. Throughout my journey I have been able to
access services from all of their tiers to meet my
three outcomes.
I have also been able to talk to Viki and Claire
about any problems I have had or services that
have not worked for me.
Halfway through the process I had a review with
Viki as she assessed me, this was important to let
me know how I am meeting my outcomes.
24. Glitch now that you have completed your 4 month
journey with Shield it is important for us to talk
about what you have achieved and how you have
done this and if you still feel you have not
achieved some of your outcomes how you can do
this.
I was able to discuss with Viki how I
feel about my Journey with Shield, the
good and bad points and how I can
move forward from here. Along the
way Viki and the other workers have
also been able to signpost me to other
services I can use.
