Fundecitrus: science and sustainability in citriculture
1. Fundecitrus was created in 1977 as a
response response to the need for citrus groves
to remain healthy in order to be competitive
with the aim of seeking sustainable citrus
farming solutions, from an economic, social
and environmental point of view.
What is it?
The Citrus Industry
Defense Fund, Fundecitrus, is a
research and intelligence centre
maintained in partnership
by producers and industry.
2. What does
it do?
Fundecitrus is important because
it is responsible for conducting research
and developing technologies to fight
pests and diseases that affect citrus
farming, always focusing on the
efficiency of the groves and the
sustainability of the
production chain.
3. CHALLENGES
Throughout its 44 years of existence,
Fundecitrus has been responsible for
helping citrus farming overcome numerous
health challenges by developing tools to
combat diseases such as:
Citrus canker
Citrus
Black spot
Postbloom Fruit Drop
Greening
Citrus
Variegated
Chlorosis
(CVC)
Citrus Leprosis

the sector overcome many
of these challenges

5. The data is available on the Fundecitrus website, allowing citrus
growers to access information on psyllid populations;
The Phytosanitary Alert monitors 169 municipalities
throughout the state of São Paulo and
the Triângulo Mineiro;
Every fortnight it receives data from
31,642 traps set by citrus growers and Fundecitrus.

The Phytosanitary Alert tool, developed by Fundecitrus, that monitors the population of
psyllids, the mosquito that serves as vector for bacteria that transmit greening, the worst
citrus disease. The monitoring is carried out using traps spread throughout the productive
area in the State of São Paulo and Triangulo Mineiro. This service allows producers to identi-
fy the places and critical moments of psyllid occurrences and make more accurate decisions
for greening control.
6. CLIMATE MONITORING
The Postbloom Fruit Drop prediction system
has been expanded in the citrus grove areas and
now receives data from more than 60 weather
stations. The system analyses the weather
forecast data to assess risk level for the
development of the disease. This way, citrus
growers can apply fungicides only
when necessary.
Risk alerts are
sent both by email
and WhatsApp
messages.
The system has helped
citrus growers to
reduce the number
of fungicides applications
for sustainable disease
control by up to 75%.

7. BIOLOGICAL CONTROL
In its laboratories, Fundecitrus
mass rears Tamarixia, a wasp that
is a natural enemy of the
psyllid, the vector of the bacteria
that cause greening, the most serious
disease in citrus cultivation and for
which there is no cure. When released
in places with high greening
incidence, the Tamarixia parasitise
the mosquito, the mosquito, enabling
a biological and sustainable
control of this pest.
Studies show a 75% reduction in
the psyllid populations in areas
where Tamarixia are released.
80 to 100 thousand Tamarixia
are produced per month;
1 million Tamarixia
are released per year;

8. Acting towards efficient and
environmentally sustainable solutions,
Fundecitrus is working on the
development of biological products to
combat greening, the most severe
disease in citrus cultivation,
such as:
SUSTAINABILITY
AGAINST GREENING
Research
into the identification
and isolation of
pheromone molecules
that will attract the male
Diaphorina citri psyllid
into biological traps.
Development
of a biological
repellent against
the Diaphorina
citri psyllid;
Development of
the first biological insecticide
to control psyllids, the insect
vectors that transmit
greening, the main disease
affecting orange groves
around the world;
9. Fundecitrus is the entity responsible
for the Crop Research and Estimates Project (PES)
that maps out the key data in citrus production,
analysing production volume, area size, main regions,
number of plants, among others.
For the first time, the survey showed information
that goes beyond the groves and shows the Brazilian
citrus grower's commitment to the protection
of the environment.
For every 2.52 hectares
with citrus plantations there
is one hectare dedicated to
environmental preservation.
The study also identified the
existence of 181,750 hectares
of preserved native vegetation
within citrus-growing properties.
10. FIELD RESEARCH
Fundecitrus currently has 80 ongoing lines of research.
The centre conducts its research in 68 experimentation
areas distributed over more than 390 hectares in
40 municipalities across three states.
