Atticus Take A Stand
There are often times in life when one must take a stand. In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, this theme is clearly presented
throughout the novel. In this novel, the characters Scout and Jem are children of a lawyer named Atticus Finch. The novel takes place in Maycomb
County, a small town in the deep south in the early 1930s. This setting is what shapes the plot. Racism is so widespread in Maycomb that according
to Atticus, it is known as "'Maycomb's usual disease'" (100). Atticus decided to go against this and defend a black man named Tom Robinson, who
was accused of raping a white girl named Mayella Ewell. Atticus was very dedicated to help Tom, so much that he puts this case before his reputation
and the welfare of him...show more content...
Many people are angry at Atticus because he took a stand against racism. This is evident on the night in which Atticus stands outside of the jail house
to protect Tom Robinson from the mob. A man in the mob tells Atticus, "'You know what we want... Get aside from the door, Mr. Finch'" (172). This
proves that Atticus's actions of defending Tom Robinson led to him endangering himself when a mob comes to attack Tom. This strengthens the
negative effects of racism by spreading it further and deeper into the community. This shows that Atticus's decision had made racism in the minds of
the people more powerful and manipulating. In addition to that, Atticus is being targeted by not only racist people, but also everyone else. This is
demonstrated when a someone outside of the courtroom tells another, "'He had to, that's why he was doing it, equaled fewer fights and less fussing.
But did that explained the town's attitude? The court appointed Atticus to defend him. Atticus aimed to defend him. That's what they didn't like about
it'" (186). This indicates that since the usual disease is widespread, many people are talking about Atticus behind his back. The more they do so, the
more rumors are spread. In the end, even people who are not racist are being swayed to the opposing side because they believe that they, the whites,
should have superiority. Even though everyone could see that the Ewells were lying, they chose to believe in them because it was their word against a
black mans. Thus racism is what infuriates the people and disrupts their reasonings. In addition to being targeted by the entire community, Atticus is
also treated like an outcast by his own family. In the novel, Atticus's nephew, Francis, told Scout, "'Grandma says it's bad enough he lets you all run
wild, but now he's turned out a nigger–lover we'll never be able

Taking A Stand Analysis
Since the pitchers do not bat, this causes further separation between the two groups, adding even more discontinuity to the situation, highlighting the
differences between the two sub–groups. The fact that the field players are divided up into two teams to play against each other but the pitchers are
left out makes it almost like there is three teams and that causes competition. This brings as to an idea that Simmel had about groups: "A typical
example of multiple group affiliations within a single group is the competition among persons who show their solidarity in other respects" (Simmel.
2006:155). Pitchers belong to the team as a whole but also to their sub–group. The sharp distinction of the pitchers being a "third team" during
scrimmages,...show more content...
During batting practices the field players rotate around to different batting stations while the pitchers stay in the corner stretching or practicing. The
difference of not being able to bat only lets the pitchers be a small part of practice and during games it does not get better because only one pitcher can
pitch during games or scrimmages. During the scrimmages the pitchers were not divided up into two teams like the rest of the players, instead they just
rotated in and out, like they were their own team. This could add to the separation between not only the pitchers and the field players but also the
pitcher and the other pitchers. If the pitchers' "team" is the other pitchers, but they do not actually play together, than the competition or the reaching of
the goal that was the definition of a team, is not reached. In their dissertation, Zhao says this about competition within a sport team: Taken together, I
argue that within team competition is distinct from conventional competition, as its participants are bonded by the same team membership. Instead of
competing for limited rewards or performance ranks, within team competition involves competing for within team status. Specifically, within team
competition include competitive behaviors to show superiority over a target on competence, participation, and connection. [Zhao,

Patient Advocacy Case Study

Introduction Patient advocacy extends back to Florence Nightingale and remains relevant today. While Nightingale did not explicitly address
advocacy in nursing, she did demonstrate advocacy in many ways (Selanders and Crane, 2012). Today advocacy extends beyond the individual
patient to local and global populations, and nationally and globally to the nursing profession itself. The purpose of this paper is to describe this
author's role as a moral agent or advocate for a specific issue in this author's work, and explain one or more negative outcomes that may...show more

She was scheduled for total hip arthroplasty three days following admission. The daughter wanted to proceed with the surgery, and the son did not. The
ethical concern in this case hung on two issues. First, the patient demonstrated a sufficient degree of dementia to ask "will the patient be able to adhere
to instructions and hip precautions following surgery." Additionally, given her degree of debility due to her non–ambulatory status before the injury
"would it be in her best interests to proceed with the surgery?" As a team, the nurse, social worker, and I discussed these concerns with the orthopedic
PA who agreed that perhaps the fracture should just be allowed to heal on its own instead of going forward with a costly, painful surgery and extended
rehabilitation that may or may not produce the desired outcome. The PA, nurse, social worker, and I met with the orthopedic trauma surgeon and the
head of orthopedics and presented the problem. Using a duty–based, deontological framework for ethical problem solving, and the principle of
beneficence (Marquis and Huston, 2012), it was agreed that in this particular instance it would be best to let the fracture heal. As a team, we spoke with
the family and explained why this choice was the best for their mother. Although the daughter had an unreal expectation that her mother would be able
to walk again following

Take a Stand on Bullying
Bullying is a form of verbal and physical abuse that needs to stop. It takes place every day all over the world. It represents the attacking of someone
that is stronger mentally, emotionally and physically attacking someone that is weaker in all of these fields. Bullying has long term effects on its
victims such as mental and emotional stress that can carry on into the future. Bullying has been around for a while now. "Bullying is so long
established in our society and schools that is often ignored and considered as "part of normal behavior during growing up"(Dracic, S. 2009)....show

Bullying doesn't always happen at school or in person. A lot of bullying takes place over the internet. Cyber bullying has been defined as ''willful and
repeated harm inflicted through the use of computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices'' (Hinduja & Patchin,
2009). When kids get caught bullying at physically at school they then take it to electronic devices where it is harder for them to get caught. They
produce face accounts on websites to torment and torture kids that are weaker than them, such as making fake accounts on Facebook or MySpace. In
this study it says "There is a difficulty of detecting the misbehavior, identifying the offending party, proving of verifying the wrongdoing" (Hinduja, S.,
&Patchin, J.W. 2010). We need to set rules and make sure that cyber bullying comes to an end.
People that bully others should face severe consequences. We should have laws and rules that lean heavily against bullying. I believe that schools
should hold more meetings for teachers to educate kids on the severe outcomes of bullying. Schools are becoming better at educating kids on the
effects of bullying, "Fortunately, schools have strategies to prevent bullying. These strategies are most effective when they are part of a comprehensive
prevention program implemented at the district, school, and classroom levels. Research indicates that schools can cut bullying by as much as 50% with
a comprehensive school wide

A boycott organized by Emily, Madi, Angelina, and myself took place 7:40 am in school last Friday morning. Many students were not in their
respective first period rooms, and nobody showed up at all in Mr. Rogers's. The school board gathered us here today to explain the cause of this
boycott; likewise, we would like to voice out our fellow students' concerns during this conversation. Mr. Rogers treated us unfairly and showed a clear
dislike towards females.
"C? This is the lowest grade I've ever got! How is this possible?" Exclaimed female student Annie, as she pointed to her report card. One would likely
infer at first that this is due to her lack of studying, but that is only part of the story. In reality, Annie is the valedictorian

Rogers to change his inequality? Of Mr. Rogers's current and former students, 600 are selected at random to participate in a survey. Results
showed that 94% wanted Mr. Rogers to change, 1% liked the way he is, and 5% remained neutral. Upon seeing such a case, we decided to
interview a different group of students to see their perspective on this issue. A senior male student said, "I've never had Mr. Rogers before, but my
younger sister has him this year... a week ago, she came home with her report card and looked close to tears. We asked her why she was upset, and
my sister replied, 'It's Mr. Rogers; he gave me a D!' My sister is a studious student, so I can't imagine that she did anything bad. I could, however,
think of one other possibility: Mr. Rogers holds sexism. If this is true, I would definitely do something to overthrow him, and I am sure many others
would agree." A female sophomore student describes her own experience. "I go to school happy as a bird and ace all my classes until I hit Mr.
Rogers's 9th period. I try not to judge him or pollute his reputation, yet the thought is all but impossible to hold in. He obviously dislikes girls, and one
could easily distinguish the piercing glares he gave the girls and the warm gazes that he held when he looked at the boys. It hurts to say this, but many
students already wanted him out of this teaching career." Evidently, the students wanted him out––– for

Environmental pollution is a global issue that can no longer be ignored. As we continue to exploit our surroundings for natural resources, our vast
industrial activities generate serious air, soil, and water contamination, as well as climate change due to the excessive burning of fossil fuels and
release of harmful gases. And as high school students, we have come to realize our responsibility in preserving our nature for the future generation.
Upon hearing the NHD theme of "Taking a Stand," we immediately envisioned the idea of environmental activism, where the topic of Rachel
Carson and her book Silent Spring immediately captivated us to investigate her unique stance from a historical perspective. Our research process
began by gaining a baseline understanding of Carson's personal life by reading the official Carson website by Linda Lear who was awarded for her
numerous works on Carson. Then spending hours in the library, we studied Carson's Silent Spring, the most valuable primary source that gave us
insight in her overall data collection and findings, regarding the process and impact of biomagnification deriving from chemical residues. Also, the
recorded Carson's testimony in 1963, along with various legal documents from the Library of Congress, such as the Resolution 450 passed in...show

Organizing our poster into three parts–opposition, standing up, and legacies–we attempted to display the crucial steps she was forced to take. We also
strived to create a 3D model representation of the path of DDT or biomagnification in an ecosystem along the food chain, which took great efforts in
not only drawing, painting, and building, but also extra scientific research. Moreover, we attempted to recreate a copy of Silent Spring, in which we
filled with selected pieces of Carson's

Taking A Stand For Something
Have you ever taken a stand for something that truly meant something to you, or have you ever won a battle that you fought so hard for? There is a
debate that is asking if winning you what you for or just taking a stand for what you believe in is more important, and In this essay i am going to
argue my belief that taking a stand for something is far more important than actually winning it. Taking a stand for something shows courage, it shows
bravery, and it shows that what you are taking a stand for means something to you, you may not always win or have it go your way, but it goes so
much further than that. For one it can inspire other people around you to take a stand for the same thing or something else that they believe in, and

  • 5. Patient Advocacy Case Study Taking a Stand Barbara De Groot, RN Walden University NURS 6053, Inter–professional Organizational And Systems Leadership Barbara De Groot, RN November 14, 2014 Introduction Patient advocacy extends back to Florence Nightingale and remains relevant today. While Nightingale did not explicitly address advocacy in nursing, she did demonstrate advocacy in many ways (Selanders and Crane, 2012). Today advocacy extends beyond the individual patient to local and global populations, and nationally and globally to the nursing profession itself. The purpose of this paper is to describe this author's role as a moral agent or advocate for a specific issue in this author's work, and explain one or more negative outcomes that may...show more content... She was scheduled for total hip arthroplasty three days following admission. The daughter wanted to proceed with the surgery, and the son did not. The ethical concern in this case hung on two issues. First, the patient demonstrated a sufficient degree of dementia to ask "will the patient be able to adhere to instructions and hip precautions following surgery." Additionally, given her degree of debility due to her non–ambulatory status before the injury "would it be in her best interests to proceed with the surgery?" As a team, the nurse, social worker, and I discussed these concerns with the orthopedic PA who agreed that perhaps the fracture should just be allowed to heal on its own instead of going forward with a costly, painful surgery and extended rehabilitation that may or may not produce the desired outcome. The PA, nurse, social worker, and I met with the orthopedic trauma surgeon and the head of orthopedics and presented the problem. Using a duty–based, deontological framework for ethical problem solving, and the principle of beneficence (Marquis and Huston, 2012), it was agreed that in this particular instance it would be best to let the fracture heal. As a team, we spoke with the family and explained why this choice was the best for their mother. Although the daughter had an unreal expectation that her mother would be able to walk again following

  • 7. Essay Take a Stand Bullying Take a Stand Essay Tarik El–Ali University Success 103 September 24, 2011 Monte McKay Take a Stand on Bullying Bullying is a form of verbal and physical abuse that needs to stop. It takes place every day all over the world. It represents the attacking of someone that is stronger mentally, emotionally and physically attacking someone that is weaker in all of these fields. Bullying has long term effects on its victims such as mental and emotional stress that can carry on into the future. Bullying has been around for a while now. "Bullying is so long established in our society and schools that is often ignored and considered as "part of normal behavior during growing up"(Dracic, S. 2009)....show more content... Bullying doesn't always happen at school or in person. A lot of bullying takes place over the internet. Cyber bullying has been defined as ''willful and repeated harm inflicted through the use of computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices'' (Hinduja & Patchin, 2009). When kids get caught bullying at physically at school they then take it to electronic devices where it is harder for them to get caught. They produce face accounts on websites to torment and torture kids that are weaker than them, such as making fake accounts on Facebook or MySpace. In this study it says "There is a difficulty of detecting the misbehavior, identifying the offending party, proving of verifying the wrongdoing" (Hinduja, S., &Patchin, J.W. 2010). We need to set rules and make sure that cyber bullying comes to an end. People that bully others should face severe consequences. We should have laws and rules that lean heavily against bullying. I believe that schools should hold more meetings for teachers to educate kids on the severe outcomes of bullying. Schools are becoming better at educating kids on the effects of bullying, "Fortunately, schools have strategies to prevent bullying. These strategies are most effective when they are part of a comprehensive prevention program implemented at the district, school, and classroom levels. Research indicates that schools can cut bullying by as much as 50% with a comprehensive school wide Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Taking A Stand Speech Taking A Stand A boycott organized by Emily, Madi, Angelina, and myself took place 7:40 am in school last Friday morning. Many students were not in their respective first period rooms, and nobody showed up at all in Mr. Rogers's. The school board gathered us here today to explain the cause of this boycott; likewise, we would like to voice out our fellow students' concerns during this conversation. Mr. Rogers treated us unfairly and showed a clear dislike towards females. "C? This is the lowest grade I've ever got! How is this possible?" Exclaimed female student Annie, as she pointed to her report card. One would likely infer at first that this is due to her lack of studying, but that is only part of the story. In reality, Annie is the valedictorian ...show more content... Rogers to change his inequality? Of Mr. Rogers's current and former students, 600 are selected at random to participate in a survey. Results showed that 94% wanted Mr. Rogers to change, 1% liked the way he is, and 5% remained neutral. Upon seeing such a case, we decided to interview a different group of students to see their perspective on this issue. A senior male student said, "I've never had Mr. Rogers before, but my younger sister has him this year... a week ago, she came home with her report card and looked close to tears. We asked her why she was upset, and my sister replied, 'It's Mr. Rogers; he gave me a D!' My sister is a studious student, so I can't imagine that she did anything bad. I could, however, think of one other possibility: Mr. Rogers holds sexism. If this is true, I would definitely do something to overthrow him, and I am sure many others would agree." A female sophomore student describes her own experience. "I go to school happy as a bird and ace all my classes until I hit Mr. Rogers's 9th period. I try not to judge him or pollute his reputation, yet the thought is all but impossible to hold in. He obviously dislikes girls, and one could easily distinguish the piercing glares he gave the girls and the warm gazes that he held when he looked at the boys. It hurts to say this, but many students already wanted him out of this teaching career." Evidently, the students wanted him out––– for Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Essay On Taking A Stand Environmental pollution is a global issue that can no longer be ignored. As we continue to exploit our surroundings for natural resources, our vast industrial activities generate serious air, soil, and water contamination, as well as climate change due to the excessive burning of fossil fuels and release of harmful gases. And as high school students, we have come to realize our responsibility in preserving our nature for the future generation. Upon hearing the NHD theme of "Taking a Stand," we immediately envisioned the idea of environmental activism, where the topic of Rachel Carson and her book Silent Spring immediately captivated us to investigate her unique stance from a historical perspective. Our research process began by gaining a baseline understanding of Carson's personal life by reading the official Carson website by Linda Lear who was awarded for her numerous works on Carson. Then spending hours in the library, we studied Carson's Silent Spring, the most valuable primary source that gave us insight in her overall data collection and findings, regarding the process and impact of biomagnification deriving from chemical residues. Also, the recorded Carson's testimony in 1963, along with various legal documents from the Library of Congress, such as the Resolution 450 passed in...show more content... • 10. Taking A Stand For Something Have you ever taken a stand for something that truly meant something to you, or have you ever won a battle that you fought so hard for? There is a debate that is asking if winning you what you for or just taking a stand for what you believe in is more important, and In this essay i am going to argue my belief that taking a stand for something is far more important than actually winning it. Taking a stand for something shows courage, it shows bravery, and it shows that what you are taking a stand for means something to you, you may not always win or have it go your way, but it goes so much further than that. For one it can inspire other people around you to take a stand for the same thing or something else that they believe in, and somewhere Get more content on HelpWriting.net
