David Fincher
Fact File
David Fincher was born in 1962 in Colorado, and was raised in
California.
At age 18, he worked for ‘Korty Films’ in Mill Valley as a production
assistant, and later worked at ‘Industrial Light and Magic (ILM)’ as an
assistant cameraman.
Fincher left ILM to direct TV advertisements and music videos, and later
to direct feature-length films including ‘Se7en’ and ‘Fight Club’.
Music Videos
Fincher has directed music video’s for a variety of music icons,
including:
Madonna (Vogue, Express Yourself, Oh Father)
Michael Jackson (Who Is It)
Jermaine Stewart (We Don’t Have to Take Our Clothes Off)
Trademarks
Unlike most directors, there aren’t many creative methods
Fincher sticks to when creating music video’s. He does however
stick to more general conventions laid out by Andrew Goodwin.
One example of this is that he includes close ups to aid to the
artists’ star image. He also uses high and low angle shots to make
the artist appear either superior or inferior to the viewer,
depending on the genre of video.

smaller and in need of help)
Trademarks
Fisher uses a lot of black and white imagery in the videos directed by
him which gives a vintage feel to the video. This is one of Fincher’s
trademark styles.
He also gets a lot of close up shots of the artists in their videos to create
star image for their persona. The audience will then feel they are seeing
the artist perform if they cannot see them live.
