need a Data warehouse.
Dfcu Bank is the Ugandan firm selected.
Why DFCU Needs a Data Warehouse
To operate at high Speed.
Dfcu Bank needs a data warehouse and related systems to operate
faster because speed contributes to scale, supports active development
and brings analytics closer to real-time business operations.
For quick easy decision making
when DFCU bank wants to analyze the number of customer bank
accounts registered in there database, it will easily help in making any
decision making in improving the bank system and its services.
3. a) Describe the Company
Dfcu Bank as a company is described below;
Dfcu is a fast growing local financial institution offering specialized products in
Personal and Business Finance.
Dfcu Limited was started by the Commonwealth Development Corporation
(CDC) of the United Kingdom and the Government of Uganda through the
Uganda Development Corporation (UDC) under the name of Development
Finance Company of Uganda Limited. Later restructuring brought in DEG (of
Germany) and International Finance Corporation (IFC) as equal partners with CDC
and UDC, each having a 25% stake in the company. Its objective was to support
long-term development projects whose financing needs and risk did not appeal
to the then existing financial commercial lending institutions.
Dfcu Limited was incorporated under the Laws of Uganda on the 14th of May
1964, as a Private Limited Liability Company.

5. b) Current challenges
It’s timely and costly
Usual time taken for DFCU bank to build an Electronic Data Ware house varies from a
couple of years. It also requires substantial effort & eventually huge amount of money to
construct a data warehouse.
User acceptance
There’s a challenge of making a newly built data warehouse acceptable to the users. No
matter how good or great you think your data warehouse is, unless the users accept
and use it wholeheartedly the project will be considered a failure. Most of the data
warehouse projects fail for not being used and accepted by users.
Technological complexity
Generally, source data is kept in multiple operating systems & multiple data base
technologies. There are plenty of tools for data sourcing, data quality management, data
integration, data ware housing, reporting & analytics. Choosing an appropriate
technology is not so simple and is complicated by various emerging techniques like data
virtualization.
6. Data Quality
In a data warehouse, there could be lack of ability to manage data quality issues for DFCU
bank. Data comes from many disparate sources from all facets of an organization. When a
data warehouse tries to combine inconsistent data from disparate sources, it encounters
errors. Inconsistent data, duplicates, logic conflicts, and missing data all result in data quality
challenges. Poor data quality results in faulty reporting and analytics necessary for optimal
decision making.
Performance Issues
A data warehouse must also be carefully designed to meet overall performance
for DFCU bank. So it must be fully designed from the beginning to meet the purposes of the
bank for good performance.
7. c) Possible Benefits Of Creating A Data
Warehouse
For Better decision-making
DFCU bank Data warehouses store credible facts and statistics, and decision makers will be able to
retrieve that information from the data warehouse based on their personal needs. In addition to
making strategic decisions, it can also assist in marketing division, inventory management, financial
management, and sales.
For Quick and easy access to data
Speed is an important factor that sets you above your competitors. Business users can quickly access
data from multiple sources from a data warehouse, meaning that precious time won’t be wasted on
retrieving data from multiple sources.
Good Data quality and consistency
Since data warehouses gather information from different sources of bank branches and convert it into
a single and widely used format, departments in the bank will produce results that are in line and
consistent with each other. When data is standardized, there is confidence in its accuracy.
