Building Resilience in Your Team

2. BAN PITY
PARTIES
Positivity protects us against adversity and cultivates resilience.
A pity party (where a group gets together and moans about the
the organisation/management/pay) drains positivity and makes
us less productive. Focus on what's in your control, not what isn't.
3. WALKING
MEETINGS
"Sitting is the smoking of our generation" according to Nilofer
Merchant, a chief executive who decided to turn meeting culture
on its head and ensure one meeting a day was a walking one. A
study by Stanford University in 2014 revealed that a person's
creative output increased on average by 60% when walking.
4. CELEBRATE
SUCCESS
Self belief is critical for resilience and you can build this is by
recognising and celebrating individual and team success. You
don't need an awards ceremony to do this, a weekly email where
team members share a 'success' of the past week is a powerful
way to increase self belief and therefore resilience.
5. TEAM GOAL
SETTING
You've probably heard the story about the cleaner at NASA
who, during a presidential visit, was asked what he did. His
answer? "I'm helping put a man on the moon." Resilient teams
have a shared purpose and clear goals. Annual team goal
setting ensures that everyone is aligned and focused on what
really matters.
6. STEP OUT
OF YOUR
COMFORT
ZONE
Resilient people regularly step out of their comfort zone, so
when things don't go quite to plan they aren't fazed as they
know they are strong enough to deal with it. Encourage all
team members to work on something that scares them at least
once a month. A team challenge is even better, group skydive
anyone?
