11. echnology is the philosopher's stone for global
Tindustries and consumers alike. Whatever sphere it
touches is transformed by magic. Some industries
and sectors, such as real estate, construction, and
infrastructure, have seen slow and low digitalization
adoption rates due to their more physical nature and
traditionally change-resisting nature. They are like a three-
headed snake snoozing deep within its labyrinth,
uninterested in what's going on outside. Further, an entirely
unorganized playing ļ¬eld, disarrayed supply chain, and
cobweb-like problems intertwined at the bottleneck created
an industry deep into a slumber of ages.
Sensing its hibernation, two young playersāāAditya Sharda
and Souvik Senguptaāāwithout any prior experience or
expectations entered this sleeping heavyweight's belly and
using that philosopher's stone of technology cast such a
spell of Infra.Market that in the span of just six years since
its inception, not only disrupted the slumber but also
created their own multi-faced behemoth of $2.5 billion (as
of August 2021).
Today, as India's Leading Tech Enabled Construction
Solutions player, with a vision of transforming the entire
construction ecosystem and its supply chain in India and
abroad, the company is rebuilding the future of construction
through technology and innovation.
Infra.Market is the fastest-growing Unicorn in the
construction solutions space with best-in-class economics
and proļ¬tability metrics. Manish Sharma, the Head of the
Construction Machinery Division, shares, "Being proļ¬table
for six consecutive years since our inception, our current
value of $2.5 billion is soon going to leapfrog." Oļ¬ering a
technologically superior procurement to execution-
experience in the construction ecosystem, the company is
redeļ¬ning how end-to-end solutions can be delivered in this
otherwise opaque industry.
The Fastest Growing Ecosystem
Deepening its horizontal play, from Concrete to Modular
Furniture, Infra.Market is creating value and driving growth
through organic innovation and inorganic acquisitions. In
May 2021, it bought a Hyderabad-based construction
equipment rental player Equiphunt, followed by RDC
Concrete, the largest Indian independent ready-mix
concrete player in September 2021. With the RDC
acquisition and Infra.Market in-house capabilities in Ready
Mix Concrete, the company reached a category-deļ¬ning
position in the industry. Recently, in January 2022,
Infra.Market picked up a strategic stake in Shalimar Paints,
a listed Indian paint company. It is the only construction
solutions company to have an ISO-certiļ¬ed world-class
R&D center.
Infra.Market's experiential B2C retail outlets make the
network of Architects more accessible to consumers who
are looking at building their dream spaces. The Best of
Architects, Brands, and their Wide Range of Products can
all be accessed under one roof, solving a lot of hassles for
both a consumer and an architect/interior designer.
Construction and Infrastructure is one of the industries with
complex problems in the value chain and Infra.Market is
working to solve them via smart use of technology by
creating a community of Manufacturers, Dealers, and
Architects across India. Manish feels, "We are disrupting
the opaque nature of this sector by bringing in transparency
and eļ¬ciency. Internally, many investors refer to us as the
'Amazon of Construction.ā
Manish has been instrumental in handling the organization's
commercial operations to ensure its sustainable growth. An
innovative thinker and leader with a rich experience of 22
years, he enables growth and excellence by collaborating
with key partners to identify inventive solutions for the
business. He has a record of building high-performing
teams and incubating breakthrough innovations. His
knowledge of navigating the business dynamics of the
equipment market guides and encourages the team to
deliver their best performance in the construction
equipment industry. His work at the leadership level in
Plant and Machinery on various infrastructure projects is
appreciable.
Equiphunt ā Transparency: Reliability: Eļ¬ciency
Sharing USPs of Equiphunt, Manish says that started in
2016, Equiphunt also known as Sociam Equipment
Solutions Pvt Ltd, functions as a one-stop provider for all

12. equipment and service needs. As an innovative player in the
equipment rental market, its peer-to-peer rental marketplace
is a USP that is not yet explored in India. With over 2000
equipment listed under this company; it is a ļ¬rst-of-its-kind
business idea that is coupled with a Mixed Fleet Asset
Management Platform. From trading spares to old and
refurbished equipment, big brand names as well as SMEs
can locate equipment within their budget.
Telling more about Equiphant's oļ¬erings and aspects that
make it stand out in the cutthroat competition, Manish
conveys that one of the bottlenecks that contractors face
while managing a construction project is the sourcing of
high-quality equipment within their budget. It is a constant
struggle for most businesses in this industry to manage this
part of their project. "Thus, our mission is to help them gain
clarity and enhancement by managing end-to-end asset
management," he states. And this can be best fulļ¬lled by
digitization and innovation.
He furthers, "We take pride in having dealerships with
signiļ¬cant brands including BERCO (Italy) for
Construction Equipment Spares, Donaldson for
Construction Equipment ļ¬lters, Doosan BOBCAT for
Construction Equipment Trade, Spares and Maintenance,
Apollo Tyres and JK Tyres Construction Equipment Tyres
and Tubes.ā
Disrupting the Indian Heavy Equipment Market
Being an experienced leader, sharing his opinion on how
the adoption of modern technologies like AI and ML is
impacting the Construction Equipment space and how
Equiphunt in particular is adapting to the change, Manish
says that one goal that Equiphunt looks forward to is its
plan to disrupt the Indian Heavy Equipment market and
improve eļ¬ciency through innovation. He divulges, "We
are not only adapting to change ourselves but also looking
to smoothly transition the market to a data-driven decision-
making culture. By improving equipment utilization and
reducing operational costs, we are continuously evolving to
leverage rapid advances in data science, Internet of Things
(IoT), and AI to transform the heavy equipment
marketplace.ā
Considering the current scenario, when probed about what
challenges they had to encounter initially as opposed to
current challenges, Manish cites that initially, the
challenges were galore as this industry is still as traditional
as ever and has not seen much of a digital revolution. "Our
customers were not ready for this instant change and that is
understandable. As the concept of intermediary for
construction equipment rentals was unheard of, building
trust in our customers was the main challenge," he puts.
There were minor challenges in payments with respect to
receivables and delays in the deadlines resulting in
hampered operations. "But, with time and experience, we
navigated them skillfully with persistence and patience
while communicating with original equipment
manufacturers (OEMs) and clients. We started getting
orders and proved ourselves consistently, which also
increased our standing in this industry," he adds.
The Virtue of Patience
In his advice to budding entrepreneurs who aspire to
venture into the Construction Equipment space, Manish
says one word ā Patience and elaborates on it by adding
that patience is a virtue especially when it comes to making
a mark in the construction equipment space. This is an
industry that is traditional in every sense of the word, and
every entrepreneur should be ready to trust the experience
gained and use in-depth knowledge speciļ¬c to this industry.
However, this can be only achieved with consistency and
determination to see things through.
On envisioning Equiphunt's operations and oļ¬erings in the
future, Manish shares, "While we had started the idea of
selling spares early on, somehow the focus was more on the
rental platform and creating strong relationships with our
customers and partners.ā
Boundlessly Big
Considering that one of the bottlenecks in the construction
equipment industry is the under-utilization of machinery,
turning that into a proļ¬table idea was worth it. Thus, they
ramped up the sales of their spare parts this year.
"Acquisitions have been a way to drive growth for us and
we will continue to connect with many more national and
international trustworthy brands and suppliers. Also, while
we were previously catering to only the construction sector,
we realize our service is just as required in other sectors
like Crusher and Mining and factories across sectors. We
are set to enter other sectors to expand our customer base
vertically," he concludes.

15. Concepts
and
Developments
ith the changing dynamics of the
Wconstruction world, advancing
equipment is needed by time and the
forthcoming generation to cope with the ever-
changing world. Various manufacturers primarily
focus on enhancing their machinery more
smartly with the use of proprietary technological
advancements that lead to eļ¬cient operations
and ease the entire construction process
happening all around the globe.
As the famous quote goes, āIt is important to
look at construction machinery technologies with
a diļ¬erent lens than the ones just supplying and
delivering more information to the cab of the
machine.ā
It is believed that technology needs to be
integrated with machine controls while helping
simplify operations.
Observing the pace with which advanced
machines in the construction sector, technology
plays the forefront along with the integration of
several new technologies leading to various
types of equipment. It drives productivity as well
as the uptime required in the operations.
Thus, comprehending emerging trends, letās dive
right in and learn more!
Digital Twin Technology
A digital twin is a digital representation of a
physical entity that includes its existing and
prospective resources, technologies, information,
procedures, routines, workers, and tools, as well
as its digital representation. A digital twin
collects sensor data to create an enhanced
overview of a physical building before creating a
replica.
A second copy makes evaluating, changing, and
optimizing a physical structure much more
accessible. Organizations can use the digital twin
to improve eļ¬ciency, implement safety
standards, reduce risk, and improve quality.

16. Furthermore, digital twins serve as a digital fabric directly
linked to a structural system, which improves BIM. Again,
digital twins could be used to verify whether or not a
created asset meets speciļ¬c key performance indicators
related to sustainability and other criteria.
Integrated Grade Control Systems
Grade control systems are the second major technology
inļ¬uencing construction equipment today. Technology
providers frequently collaborate with manufacturers to
provide advanced 3D-grade control without using external
masts or cables. This can save money and reduce the risk of
theft or damage to the equipment.
āIntegrated grade control systems are the construction
industryās present and future,ā says Kahler. āProļ¬t is
synonymous with precision and speed.ā
The advantage is that oļ¬-machine precision construction
tools are more widely available through CASE dealers. Pipe
lasers, rotating lasers, underground utility locators, and
automatic and electronic levels are all examples.
Topcon Positioning Systems and John Deere have formed a
strategic partnership to co-develop Topconās SmartGrade
system and provide integrated grade control to the
construction industry.
Telematics
Telematics is one of the key technologies transforming the
construction industry. A telematics system can send alerts
about machine diagnostics, which can help prevent
downtime, theft, and misuse.
According to Savage of Vermeer, many manufacturers
utilize telematics, which allows the machine to
communicate vital information to ļ¬eet managers and
equipment owners. Furthermore, telematics provides
several advantages to the construction industry, including
increased productivity, eļ¬ciency, and operational security.
Telematics technology can remotely track and report data
such as location, fuel consumption, and machine operation.
For example, John Deere provides JDLink, which monitors
this on equipment. However, according to Kahler, one of
the most valuable aspects of JDLink is the productās
availability.
Drones
Construction drones, also known as uncrewed aerial
vehicles, are the ļ¬nal technology impacting the job site
today. According to the Teal Group, civil unmanned aerial
systems are attracting venture capital, and the civil, non-
military market will grow 15.6 percent between 2020 and
2029.
It also predicts that commercial use will outnumber
consumer use in 2024, with construction dominating the
retail market for the next decade.
Several technology ļ¬rms are developing intelligent systems
to help transform how the construction industry conducts
business on the job site. āDrones, which were once thought
to be primarily for recreation, are now being used for
industrial work,ā explains Kahler.
āIn the case of John Deere, we formed a strategic alliance
with Kespry to provide customers with a revolutionary new
system for quickly capturing survey-grade topography in
minutes. He says this has made UAVs indispensable for
bidding, productivity tracking, inventory management, and
project veriļ¬cation.
In a Nutshell
Construction companies are given a comprehensive set of
tools and building blocks to help them develop and
optimize an exceptional communication system. It also
promotes creating a collaborative work environment where
ideas and concepts can be freely shared between teams,
allowing the organization to move forward and adopt new
technologies and trends.
As a result, construction ļ¬rms must have the plan to adapt
and be ļ¬exible in embracing new trends and technologies
across all departments.

irrespective of volatile market conditions or buyerā
sentiments.
What would be your advice to budding entrepreneurs
who aspire to venture into the Construction Equipment
space?
Budding entrepreneurs should have a clear-cut strategy in
place in terms of manufacturing, dealership, distribution,
sales, and customer support. To achieve success, itās
ultimately their passion that counts, coupled with hard
work, integrity, and dedication.

oļ¬erings in 2023 and beyond?
We will continue to be a partner in progress with our
government in helping them build a Naya Bharat by
supplying best-in-class construction equipment. In the
months to come, we plan to launch technologically superior
equipment, expand the dealer network and open 4s oļ¬ces
across key cities and towns. The next year 2023 and

4.0 like IoT, IIoT, artiļ¬cial intelligence, cognitive
computing, and cloud computing to their machinery and
services in the recent past, while new updates to the whole
industry like holographic mapping and drone imaging have
elevated the level of quality of maintenance services
provided by the vendors of the industry.
The introduction of telematics to the CE Industry has been
an integral step in leading the industry to the 4.0 revolution.
Telematics features added to heavy-duty equipment like
excavators, boom pumps, wheel loaders, etc., have
augmented the capability of these machines to perform with
consistent productivity. The geo-positioning of the machine,
various sensors reporting the status updates of work, and
the ability to premeditate maintenance needs of the machine
have created a healthy work environment for the machine
and assured longer life for the machines. This innovation
has given clear visibility on the equipment's utilization and
availability, which has been a major factor in adhering to
the project timeline.
We oļ¬er top-drawer telematics combined with a premium
engine, irrespective of the category of tonnage and capacity
of the machine. We oļ¬er engines with tuned power curves
that optimize power consumption and enables our machines
to perform in any condition and any ambient temperatures.

equipped with ergonomically designed noise-proof cabins
for extra operator comfort, safety, and ease of operation.
Considering the current scenario, what initial challenges
did you face and what are the challenges now, and how
you overcome them?
Initially, we faced arduous challenges in the infra-market
and with the global supply chain disruption, technical
awareness of end users, etc. We have emerged victoriously
in the face of these challenges, and we successfully
established our brand identity as the leading supplier of
Trenchless technology equipment in the Indian Market.

solutions as per the productivity requirement. With
continued eļ¬ort, the delivery of advanced and user-friendly
technologies for balanced economic progress has become
synonymous with the work we do in the market.
With the growing trend of technologies in India, unques-
tionably Trenchless Technology will play a vital role in all-
round development. We are planning to keep upgrading in
all possible ļ¬elds to adopt advanced technologies and
continuous expansion in after-sales, Stock points and
provide all-around project support for our customers. We
have also launched a fully ļ¬edges E-commerce portal for
our customers to select, pay and track their spare parts and
genuine SCHWING oil orders through an online portal.
What would be your advice to budding entrepreneurs
who aspire to venture into the Construction Equipment
space?
The young leaders of the industry have been notably
successful recently, but it has to be seen whether they are
leaders with superior emotional intelligence, which
contributes to self-awareness and self-management.
Leading with emotional intelligence brings out
transparency, authenticity, and acceptability by one and
all. And I believe that such leaders will bring success to the
organization quickly and consistently.
How do you envision scaling SCHWING Stetter Indiaās
operations and oļ¬erings in the future?
Concrete Equipment Market Continues to grow with
promising YoY growth predictions and expansive investment
plans under the schemes from the National Infrastructure
Pipeline program from Government.
The sanctioning of multiple infra projects, metro rail, high-
speed rail projects, and expressway projects have created an
immense demand drive in the CE market and the increased
connectivity brought by the completion of these projects
also brings promises of larger scale infra projects.
Regarding the emerging trends in the ļ¬eld, Boom pumps
are ļ¬nding a signiļ¬cant space in the RMC sector, like never
before due to its one-man operation, thereby deleting excess
manpower. Due to the increased demand for ready-mix
concrete and due to the huge inļ¬ux of Projects awarded by
the Government, clients are opting for higher-output
Batching plants, pumps, and mixers rather than equipment
with smaller capacity.

27. onstruction is moving and assembling materials and equipment
Cto create a completed, operational facility. Many construction
operations are repetitive but are not performed in a ļ¬xed
sequence or at a designated location. Furthermore, construction, unlike
manufacturing, rarely involves the production of a standardized product.
The material supply functions of buying, expediting, receiving,
warehousing, and delivery are much more complex.
Many of these reasons have kept the basic construction process of
building stick by stick, piece by piece, unchanged since the Middle
Ages.
However, there is a high potential for signiļ¬cant developments in the
future that will change the fundamental nature of construction. These
developments will build on advances seen in other industries.
They will be global in origin and scope, with applications driven by
ongoing technological innovation and competitive pressures. They
would include direct technological impacts on the performance of
speciļ¬c construction activities and signiļ¬cant changes in how a
construction business is managed.
Without further ado, let's delve in and learn more!
Virtual Reality & Artiļ¬cial Reality (VR & AR)
Workers could be exposed to environments such as conļ¬ned spaces or
working at heights in a safe, controlled environment using virtual reality
(VR). VR simulators have long-trained soldiers, pilots, and surgeons.

Industry?

28. They could train workers on everything from operating
cranes and excavators to welding and masonry work.
In contrast, Augmented Reality (AR) is another technology
that can signiļ¬cantly improve construction site safety.
There are several ways that AR can be deployed on the job
site, such as allowing for the development of a more
detailed safety plan or providing heavy equipment training
using actual equipment in real locations with augmented
hazards.
Furthermore, companies are relying on bricklaying robots
or rebar-tying robots. Once set up, these robots can work
indeļ¬nitely to complete tasks faster than human workers
without taking breaks or going home.
Role of Automation
Automation is vital in enhancing workforce eļ¬ciency, as it
can seamlessly execute manually intensive tasks within a
shorter time frame. This ensures that the construction
workforce can allocate eļ¬ort to innovative and timely
processes, driving more outstanding output quality.
Teams can focus on improving site execution when key
areas such as indent management, multi-site material
transfer, and scheduling are automated through a centralized
system.
The increase in workforce eļ¬ciency directly translates into
more signiļ¬cant cost savings for projects that may already
be experiencing delays and overruns. All team members can
seamlessly comply with outlined objectives with automated
processes at scale. This directly boosts transparency and
employee output throughout the lifespan of the project.
Furthermore, construction projects are utilizing robotics,
drones, artiļ¬cial intelligence, and other advanced
technologies to translate designs to on-ground execution
eļ¬ectively. They also help with site quality inspection,
safety reporting, visual reporting, and other tasks.
These technologies provide workers with more data points
to ensure a smooth breakdown of ļ¬eldwork across all
project sizes. They also assist construction workers in
developing novel scientiļ¬c insights for improving project
outcomes.
Finer Collaboration with Technology
The increased collaboration among stakeholders is a crucial
beneļ¬t of implementing an enterprise-wide technology
solution for construction projects. Because of the increased
eļ¬ciency of partnerships, nearly 70% of Indian
construction ļ¬rms are in the early stages of their
digitization journey.
Larger capital projects typically experience 20% time and
80% budgetary overruns over their lifetimes, making them
increasingly diļ¬cult to manage at scale. With the
introduction of digitization, construction enterprises can
become more responsive to dynamic changes and trends
while maintaining team connectivity.
This improves collaboration and productivity by allowing
more stakeholders access to building designs, schematics,
planning, and budgeting without having to go through
multiple stages of data collection.
Better Planning Stage Eļ¬ciencies
The emphasis on strategic planning through technology is
one of the most signiļ¬cant areas of impact for the
construction industry. Several technological features, such
as BIM, 4D, ERP, CRMs, and 3D printing, can be
introduced into construction projects to help workers better
understand project realities at scale. Indeed, incorporating
BIM into construction planning and strategy can save up to
20% of total costs by shortening construction time.
For an omnichannel transformation experience, 66% of
construction enterprises prioritize vital technologies such as
BIM, virtual mapping, building visualization, compliance
tools, etc. They are constructing an ecosystem to improve
planning and strategy to save money throughout the project.
As a result, the construction workforce is becoming more
productive, with improved access to quality project data
during critical planning stages.
To encapsulate,
Construction design will become more sophisticated during
the conceptual phase, with real-time database
communications networks supporting estimating,
scheduling, and project management.
Automation and expert systems will be heavily used in
management methods to improve productivity and schedule
performance.
To remain competitive in today's dynamic and ever-
changing market, construction businesses must embrace
such technological advances and gradually adopt
technology best suited to the projects.
