What is the uses and gratifications
theory?
- There are needs the audience have that
media texts fulfil; the text gratifies the
needs and the audience choose to use them
based on what they want gratified
- Escapism; a break from the everyday either
through excitement or distraction
- Information; additional information about
the world around the audience
- Personal Identity; relatable characters or
events that the audience can identify with
- Social Interaction; either the opportunity to
discuss texts with others or the text itself
offering comfort akin to interaction due to
character’s feeling like friends over time

- Convention; a common feature of the media

- Connotation; what a feature means

media product including text and the
meaning these elements create

What is a representation and a
stereotype?
- A representation is the RE – PRESENTATION
of something; it is the way something is
presented once it has been mediated
through the media form
- E.g. superman can be represented as heroic
and typically human OR alien and
otherwordly
- A stereotype is a simplified representation
of a person; it is a short hand way to show a
character or place but is often shallow and
needs development
- E.g. the dumb blonde or the smart kid with
glasses
