Systemic sclerosis (SSc) • Generalized disorder characterized by skin and internal organ fibrosis associated with vascular abnormalities and autoimmune phenomena • The disease is typically seen in people 30 to 50 years old, but it can be diagnosed at any age. Women are more likely than men to be diagnosed with this condition.
- 3. • Diffuse systemic sclerosis covers more of the skin, and is at risk of progressing to the visceral organs, including the kidneys, heart, lungs and gastrointestinal tract. • Abnormalities are shown in all parts of the alimentary tract • Oral manifestations and the lip thickness significantly affect quality of life of the patients Systemic sclerosis (SSc)
- 5. Methods • Mouth Handicap in Systemic Sclerosis (MHiSS) scale • Distance between the nearest parts of the incisors in the sagittal plane
- 6. Patients • Investigated 51 SSc patients (36 women, 15 men) • Medium age: F-58 M-49

- 9. Results • The mean result of the MHiSS scale was 24,73 M –20,67 F – 26,58
- 11. Results • Mean distance between incisors was 29,65mm M – 34,2 mm F – 27,75 mm
- 12. Results • Period from appearance of Raynaud’s phenomenon was 5,98 years (men – 2,2 years, women 7,56 years) • Period from appearance of other symptoms than Raynaud’s phenomenon (usually skin hardening) was 5.82 years (men – 2 years, women 7,42 years).
- 13. Results • Oral abnormalities are common and significant • There was a statistical correlation between disease duration (from onset of Raynaud’s phenomenon) and the mouth handicapping p<0,01

- 15. Conclusion • Oral abnormalities are common and significant • The obtained results indicate the need for more detailed examination of the oral cavity in SSc patients and application of the MHiSS scale may serve a useful tool for this purpose.
