2. Collocation
• Tendency of word to co-occur with each other
• Relationship of word which they have
together and mostly come together
• Specific selection of words

3. Types of collocations
• grammatical collocations
• A “grammatical collocation” contains a
noun/verb/ adjective plus a preposition
or a particular form of the verb (-ing or
infinitive).

Verb + preposition: depend on
• Adjective+ preposition: afraid of
• Noun +particular verb:strength to lift it

• In“lexical collocations” a verb, noun, adjective
or adverb forms a predictable connection with
another word, as in:

8. Strong Collocation
• Word that are strongly attached with each
other
• Words collocate with each other very often.
• The range of strong collocation is very rare

9. Weak Collocation
• Combinations are free
• Words can freely subsiquated
• Example
• Bura Dost
• Buri Sohbat
• Buri Larki

10. Medium Strength Collocation
• Words occur with each other more often
frequently
• Neither they are strong nor weak they are
medium in their collocation
• Their tendency to co-occur is greater then any
other combination
• Examples
• Qayamat Khaiz

11. Unique collocation
• Words are very unique in co-occuring with
each other
• Example
• Aab Doz
