2. In this document Michael Welsh, shows the evolution of youtube and also
the creation of human relationship with media; the internet and youtube
allowed people to express themselves as they wish, and people could aspire
to be whoever they wish to be. As the world's largest video platform,
YouTube has had an impact in many fields, with some individual YouTube
videos having directly shaped world events. Youtube produced more
programming in the space of 6 months without producers and just ordinary
people just posting videos, than other major channels had in the last 60
years.
3. Youtube is one of the most influential concepts in human history. Traditional
communities were breaking down, the people were living in isolated environments
such as suburbs and youtube is an amazing media source to connect people all over
the world .e.g. through vlogs of their daily lives. The document demonstrated how
media mediates human relationships, and through the use of webcam it allowed
people from anywhere in the world to be able to share feelings, thoughts and even
themselves and connect with others through time-space compressions. People can
express their individualism through Youtube but still value community. Michael
Welsh also mentions that beauty was noticed in Youtubers because you can stare at
them as long as you want without it being socially awkward. Also he says how
youtube isn’t just a technology, “it’s a social space built around video communication
that is searchable, taggable and mashable,” Wesch said, “it is space where identities,
values and ideas are produced, reproduced, challenged and negotiated in new ways
and for that very reason, youtube can help people to reflect upon themselves and
form new identities.
4. However there are also negative aspects, shown in
the shown in the document, the monetization of
Youtube is affecting, as now really big companies and
major media institutions are putting their videos on
Youtube. Also, Wesch says that we use vlogs to show
our true identity, but i could be argude that people
were dis playing a fake identity in order to be popular,
especially once a pay cheque is involved.
5. David Gauntlett ‘Making is Connecting’
David Gaunlett is a British sociologist and media theorists. He specializes in studying
contemporary media audiences, the every making and sharing of digital nedia, and the role of
such media in self-identity an self-expression.
Gaunlett, published ‘Media Studsies 2.0’ online in 2007, which argues that classic media studies
fails to define when the categories of ‘audiences’ and ‘producers’ unite and that new, altered
teaching methods are needed.
Web 2.0 is harnessing collective intelligence. Gaunlett states that because of we 2.0, we as
audiences can become our own producers thanks to websites such as Youtube. Through this we
can create our own identity and even influence other people. Also, Web 2.0 allows faster, more
collaborative creativity, creativity linked with desire to be connected and it increases people’s
communication skills.
