George I was the first Hanoverian king of Great Britain. He did not speak English but relied on his minister Robert Walpole to communicate. He turned to the Whig party to form his government and establish their supremacy. While initially active in foreign policy, George I later lost power as he stopped attending cabinet meetings. He faced two rebellions by Jacobites supporting the Catholic James Stuart, and there was a decline in the monarchy's political power during his reign.
