Communicating with Heart: Essential Teachings From
The Quran and Prophet (PBUH)
linkedin.com/pulse/communicating-heart-essential-teachings-from-quran-prophet-amjad
Effective communication is a vital skill we use daily in our personal and professional lives.
How we communicate with others can significantly impact our relationships and
interactions, whether with family, friends, coworkers, or strangers. The teachings of the
Quran and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) offer valuable insights into how we can
communicate more effectively, respectfully, and compassionately with others.
By incorporating these teachings into our daily communication, we can build stronger
relationships, resolve conflicts more peacefully, and positively impact our communities.
This article will explore the critical teachings of the Quran and Prophet Muhammad
(PBUH) on effective communication and provide practical tips for applying these
teachings in our daily lives.
The Quran emphasizes the importance of speaking in a kind and respectful tone:
"And speak to people kindly" (Quran 2:83).
This verse highlights the importance of gentle and respectful language, even in
challenging situations.
The Quran also encourages Muslims to listen actively and show empathy toward others:
"And listen to what is said with attention, and follow the best of it" (Quran 39:18).
This verse emphasizes the importance of active listening, taking the time to understand
what is being said, and responding with empathy.
Similarly, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasized the importance of good
communication and a respectful tone.
He reportedly said, "The best among you are those with the best manners and character"
(Sahih Bukhari, Book 73, Hadith 56).
2/3
This hadith highlights the importance of good manners and character in communication,
which includes being respectful and gentle in our tone.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) also practiced active listening and empathy in his
interactions with others.
He is reported to have said, "I have been sent to perfect good character" (Musnad Ahmad,
8598).
This hadith highlights the importance of good character in communication, which
includes active listening and empathy toward others.
In addition to these general teachings, the Quran and the Hadith offer specific guidance
on communicating in different contexts. For example, the Quran encourages Muslims to
use gentle language when speaking to parents:
"Lower to them the wing of humility, out of mercy, and say: 'My Lord, have mercy upon
them as they brought me up when I was small'" (Quran 17:24).
This verse highlights the importance of showing respect and humility when
communicating with parents and seeking Allah's mercy.
The Quran also encourages Muslims to speak out against injustice and oppression:
"O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and
do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to
righteousness" (Quran 5:8).
This verse highlights the importance of speaking out against injustice and standing up for
what is right, even if it is difficult.
The Quran and the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) teachings on communication
emphasize the importance of speaking in a kind and respectful tone, active listening,
empathy towards others, good character, and standing up for justice. By following these
teachings, Muslims can improve their communication skills and build stronger
relationships with others.
What we learned from these teachings:
1. Speak gently and respectfully: Try to use soft and respectful words, even in
challenging situations. Avoid using harsh language or raising your voice when
communicating with others.
2. Practice active listening: When communicating with others, listen actively and
understand what they say. Pay attention to their body language and tone of voice,
and respond empathetically.
3. Show empathy towards others: Try to put yourself in the other person's shoes
and understand their perspective. Show compassion and understanding toward
their feelings and opinions.
3/3
4. Avoid interrupting: Be patient and allow the other person to finish speaking
before responding. Interrupting can be seen as disrespectful and can hinder
effective communication.
5. Use positive body language: Use body language that conveys positivity and
openness, such as maintaining eye contact, nodding your head, and using a relaxed
posture.
6. Speak out against injustice: If you witness injustice or oppression, use your
voice to speak out against it. Stand up for what is right and use your communication
skills to impact your community positively.
By incorporating these teachings into our communication style, we can practice the Quran
and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) teachings on effective communication and build
stronger relationships with others.
