What is Workplace Burnout?
Workplace Burnout consists of two words:
 Workplace:- Actual location of work
against which people receives monetary
benefit.
 Burnout:- Burnout is a Job related
syndrome that is the condition of some
one who has become physically and
emotionally tired after doing a certain job
for a long time.
According to Dr. Kenneth Cooper, Burnout is:
“Characterized by emotional exhaustion, a sense of depersonalization, and feelings
of reduced personal accomplishment.”

What is Workplace Burnout? cont..
 Burnout is a state of emotional,
mental, and physical exhaustion
caused by excessive and prolonged
stress.
 It occurs when you feel overwhelmed
and unable to meet constant
demands.
 It reduces your productivity and kills
your energy, leaving you feeling
increasingly helpless, hopeless,
distrustful and annoyed.

Work Related
 Little or no control over
work.
 Lack of recognition.
 Overly demanding job
expectations.
 Monotonous or
unchallenging work.
 Disordered or high-
pressure environment.
Lifestyle
 Not enough time for
relaxing and socializing.
 Expected to be too many
things to too many people.
 Taking on too many
responsibilities.
 Not getting enough sleep.
 Lack of close, supportive
relationships.
 Lack of home/life balance.
Personality Traits
 Perfectionistic tendencies.

 Losing sight of one's values and or priorities.
 Allowing others' expectations to determine how you spend your time.
 Allowing issues to become bigger than they really are.
 Overlooking the importance of the 3R -Rest, Relaxation, and Rejuvenation.
 Failing to care for yourself.
 Adding to your 'to-do' list without deleting.
 Forgetting to express gratitude.
 Overlooking the importance of humor.

Physical signs and symptoms of burnout:
 Feeling tired and drained most of the
time
 Lowered immunity, feeling sick a lot
 Frequent headaches, back pain, muscle
aches
 Change in appetite or sleep habits
Behavioral signs and symptoms of
burnout:
 Withdrawing from responsibilities
 Isolating yourself from others
 Delaying to get things done
 Using food, drugs or alcohol to cope
 Taking out frustrations on others
 Coming in late and leaving early
Emotional signs and symptoms of
burnout:
 Sense of failure and self-doubt
 Feeling helpless, trapped, and defeated
 Detachment, feeling alone in the world
 Loss of motivation
 Negative outlook
 Decreased satisfaction

How to Mitigate? top 10 resolutions..
 Do not take unnecessary burdens!
 Get rid of any of my perfectionist behaviors and expectations.
 Ask for help - Talk to others about your difficulties and seek their support.
 Establish ways to control and manage time, workload, future and perceptions.
 Focus on 4 R - Rest & Retreat, Release, Regroup.
 Find purpose and meaning in activities.
 Reevaluate my goals and priorities.
 Do not take the whole load yourselves!
 Know Yourselves - Learn your own limits and set limits with others.
 Ask for what you want and do not assume that you will get it.

 For a person facing Burnout ‘Deconstruction of
Professionalism’ starts to work and Emotional
Utterances occur out of stimuli (Pulse Rate
Experiment).
 Barriers to communication increase as the persons
Body Codes and Contact Codes disintegrate leading to
reluctance in communicating with others.

Workplace Burnout consists of two words:  Workplace:- Actual location of work against which people receives monetary benefit.  Burnout:- Burnout is a Job related syndrome that is the condition of some one who has become physically and emotionally tired after doing a certain job for a long time.   • 4. 4 What is Workplace Burnout? cont..  Burnout is a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress.  It occurs when you feel overwhelmed and unable to meet constant demands.  It reduces your productivity and kills your energy, leaving you feeling increasingly helpless, hopeless, distrustful and annoyed. © Group-B, VGSoM, EMBA (16-19) Source: Burnout /.   • 5. Work Related  Little or no control over work.  Lack of recognition.  Overly demanding job expectations.  Monotonous or unchallenging work.  Disordered or high- pressure environment. Lifestyle  Not enough time for relaxing and socializing.  Expected to be too many things to too many people.  Taking on too many responsibilities.  Not getting enough sleep.  Lack of close, supportive relationships.  Lack of home/life balance.   • 7.  Forgetting to go back to the beginning.  Getting stuck in a channel. 7 Possible Reasons © Group-B, VGSoM, EMBA (16-19) Reasons for Workplace Burnout top 10 causes..  Losing sight of one's values and or priorities.  Allowing others' expectations to determine how you spend your time.  Allowing issues to become bigger than they really are.  Overlooking the importance of the 3R -Rest, Relaxation, and Rejuvenation.  Failing to care for yourself.  Adding to your 'to-do' list without deleting.  Forgetting to express gratitude.  Overlooking the importance of humor.
  • 8. 8 How to Identify? © Group-B, VGSoM, EMBA (16-19) Physical signs and symptoms of burnout:  Feeling tired and drained most of the time  Lowered immunity, feeling sick a lot  Frequent headaches, back pain, muscle aches  Change in appetite or sleep habits Behavioral signs and symptoms of burnout:  Withdrawing from responsibilities  Isolating yourself from others  Delaying to get things done  Using food, drugs or alcohol to cope  Taking out frustrations on others  Coming in late and leaving early Emotional signs and symptoms of burnout:  Sense of failure and self-doubt  Feeling helpless, trapped, and defeated  Detachment, feeling alone in the world  Loss of motivation  Negative outlook  Decreased satisfaction

  • 11. © Group-B, VGSoM, EMBA (16-19) 11 How to Mitigate? top 10 resolutions..  Do not take unnecessary burdens!  Get rid of any of my perfectionist behaviors and expectations.  Ask for help - Talk to others about your difficulties and seek their support.  Establish ways to control and manage time, workload, future and perceptions.  Focus on 4 R - Rest & Retreat, Release, Regroup.  Find purpose and meaning in activities.  Reevaluate my goals and priorities.  Do not take the whole load yourselves!  Know Yourselves - Learn your own limits and set limits with others.  Ask for what you want and do not assume that you will get it.
  • 12. © Group-B, VGSoM, EMBA (16-19) 12  For a person facing Burnout ‘Deconstruction of Professionalism’ starts to work and Emotional Utterances occur out of stimuli (Pulse Rate Experiment).  Barriers to communication increase as the persons Body Codes and Contact Codes disintegrate leading to reluctance in communicating with others.
