The document discusses the representation of social groups in a media product. Specifically:
- Only males are represented to emphasize the stereotype that men are survivors. Females were excluded to avoid expected romantic relationships interfering with the main character's goal of survival.
- The main character is played by a non-white British actor to increase representation and show people of all ethnicities can play lead roles.
- The 17-year-old main actor is portrayed as older to fit the timeline where the apocalypse occurred 10 years ago and to make the character more relatable and believable as a survivor.
1. “How does your media product represent particular social groups?”
2. Females
I chose not to put any females into my
film opening, as I wanted to emphasise
the main characters independence and
how his purpose is to survive, he doesn’t
have time for any sexual relations.
I also feel when a male lead comes into
close contact with a female there is an
expectation and a stereotype for them to
build some sort of attraction. I didn’t
want this within my film opening as I
wanted to converge with the stereotypes
of strong men and follow the film ‘The
Book of Eli’ as he is represented as a
survivor and is a stereotypical
protagonists as he is blind.
Males
•My film only includes the male
gender, this was because I wanted to
emphasise the stereotype that men are
survivors, and can provide to keep
themselves and others alive.
•I also felt that the film opening
should be dedicated to learning more
about the apocalypse and how it
happened, as this creates a foundation
for the audience to go off when
watching the rest of the film.
•I picked the actor for my main
character as I knew he would be able
to get this message across to my target
audience,
3. My main character was acted by Ramy Ben Fredj. He is half
Tunisian, my reasoning to add a male lead who is not white
British was because,97.6% of lead male characters are
played by white British men.
I also wanted to represent that people with different
Ethnicities are just as human as those that we see in the
Hollywood blockbuster films, and can do as good of a job.
I also picked him as my main character as I feel he had the
right features to play a scruffy man trying to survive in the
apocalypse, his hair has natural curls from his ethnic
background and it allowed me to create a ‘rough’ look,
emphasising the struggle he’s had to survive.
4. My main actor is 17 years old however I needed him to play someone slightly
older. This was so that I could show the change within him as he’s lived through
the apocalypse and he’s experienced the horror of how the world came to an
end.
It was important for him to play an older role as I have a voiceover within my
film opening that explains the duration of time it took for the world to collapse
was 10 years. If I had allowed him to play his actual age the apocalypse would
have started to take place when he was around 5 or 6, I don’t feel this would be
a good premise for my film as the character wouldn’t be relatable for older
members of my audience, and it wouldn’t show he had a good quality of life and
understanding of how life was before the apocalypse.
Another reason I needed him to play an older character was because it was
important for him to have had a previous understanding of life's luxuries before
the apocalypse, this includes money, water and food. If he was young when it
all happened there would be a problem with believeibilty as young children
have many things done for them, and for a child at age 5 to be able to survive
through 10 years of dystopia after being ‘fed with a silver spoon’ would be an
unrealistic plot line for an audience member.
