2. In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
For my media product I used a number of conventions that are typically
seen in the Hip-Hop/Rap Genre of music magazines. My main examples
for this is the colour scheme that I stuck to throughout the project, the
language type that I used and the overall general design of the front
cover, contents page and double page spread.
Generally the colour schemes of real magazines such as VIBE and XXL
use involve reds, blacks and whites. For my product I followed this
convention closely and only used these three colours for things such as
my background, masthead, cover lines and my general text.
The language type that I used for my magazine cover lines, my contents
features and my interview was very similar to those of the real
magazines that I analysed, I felt that if I used the same informal, slang
type language that my own media product would professional.
For my masthead I developed on existing conventions of media products as usually
masthead is situated in the top left segment of the page whereas my masthead covered
the whole top banner area of the front cover. My images that I used for my product
challenge the conventions of real media products as they create no direct mode of
address like normal Hip-hop/Rap magazine. I chose to have my artist facing away in all
my images because it created a sense of intrigue and mystery.
