Question 1
In what ways does your media product
use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?

2. Magazine Conventions:

• Theme relating to genre

3. Masthead
o For my masthead I looked at the Mojo logo. I found that it is
quite a simple logo and either black writing with a white
background or the other way around so I used this idea for my
own logo except I had three main colours and the logo is not
filled in.
o There is also punctuation in the logo and all the letters are the
same height and take up the same amount of space which can
be seen in my logo as well.

4. Main Image
o The main image of the Mojo edition I have chosen is an image
of a band standing at looking at the camera.
o The band takes up most of the page and even overlaps the
masthead to show the importance of the band as they
essentially will be selling the magazine by being on the front
cover. I have also done this with my magazine as the band on
my front cover take up most of the page because they are
selling the magazine.

5. Music Related Article
o On the front cover of most Mojo magazines the main article
will be the largest text on the page apart from the masthead.
The main article will also be linked with the main image on
the front cover.
o With my magazine the boldest and biggest text on my page
apart from the masthead is the main article title which also
links to the main image of the band I have chosen.

6. Theme Relating to Genre
o In the Mojo magazine their main featured artist is ‘The Kings of Leon’ who
are a rock/indie band so on the front cover there are not very many
colours bright colours to match the genre of the artist. In a double page
spread about a band similar to The Kings of Leon the colour theme is very
similar to the front cover of the magazine with darker colours.
o With my magazine my main artist is a rock/indie band so the colours are
not very bright on both the front cover and double page spread.

7. Challenges
o My magazine challenges regular the regular music magazine
because Mojo does not stick to just one genre of music as it usually
changes the genre of music that it focusses on every edition of the
magazine but I have decided to focus the magazine on just
Indie/Rock as when I conducted my questionnaire for my target
audience I found that these two genres were quite popular.
o I also found that not too many magazines solely focus on Indie
music so I thought that I would focus of Indie to stand out from
other magazines.
o I also found that on front covers of other magazines they would be
quite filled up so I decided to make mine quite simplistic and a bit
minimalistic too so that it stood out from other magazine front
covers.
