1. In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real
media products?
By Jordan Chesmin
• My project looks like a music magazine because it
replicates many other published/established music
magazines. It conforms to majority of music magazines, I
didn’t want to subvert from the usual rules because I
wanted mine to replicate other genre specific magazines.
• My magazine clearly fits into the music genre because of
the iconography I decided to use for it. I used one model
and simply asked them to give a very aggressive look
towards to the camera to represent the genre of ‘Rap/Hip-
Hop.
• I used a mid/close up shot to show the iconography of the
model, in order to represent the genre, by using Photoshop
CS6 I have been able to make my magazine look realistic
and comparable to others.
• The similar conventions I have used from
established magazine front covers is the size
of the headline, a replica
masthead, barcode, sell lines, price and date.
Throughout the process of making this
happen I used XXL magazines to inspire my
work and infiltrated crucial conventions of
their music magazines. This is shown on the
next slide.
My front cover
I was very
inspired by NAS
XXL
• It is extremely clear what the genre of my music
magazine belongs to. Through not only the use of
iconography but through the sell lines which
displays artists such as Wretch 32, Chip, Tinchy
Stryder, Giggs, K Koke and G frSH. Who are all
British born artists who are established within
British rap/Hip-Hop.
• I decided to use a close up/mid-shot for my front
cover to show conventions of the mise-en scene.
The model is wearing Dre beats which are very
well known headphones for ANY music listener.
• With the contents
page I used quite a
few conventions
that other music
magazines
use, such as having
the logo of the
magazine at the top
of the page
(normally on the
left side)
• I was mainly inspired by TI’s
double page spread as the
main image of him is
dominated by the left side
of the page and the article
is on the right side.
