2. In what ways does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions of real
media products? (front cover)
My front cover to my magazine conforms to the conventions of a real magazine, Commonly the image on the front cover of a
magazine is a medium (close or long) shot or close up shot often overlapping about of the title.
My media product uses cover lines, a strapline, barcode ,date ,
price and issue number. The use of overlap is common for
magazines, it often shows the status of the magazines, if the
magazine is well known they can afford not to show the whole
name as people will be able to tell what the magazine is due to
its popularity. This is the case for most magazines whether
they’re high end or not, it seems to be an on going trend, so I
have chose to use overlap to conform to the trend.
For my strapline “your
weekly beat of culture”
conforms to conventions
as it’s the magazines
personal slogan that
would be on every issue
which is what most
magazines do. My use of
“weekly” straight away
tells you how often the
magazine comes out,
‘beat’ cleverly relates to
music and the title
‘Pulse’.
In music magazines the will be mentions and cover
lines including well known musical artists of the
genre of the magazine, I have used this for my
magazine to conform to this by using names of
well known artists for my cover that are also artists
of the RnB/Rap genre of my magazine
‘dos and don’t’ this kind
of cover line could
possibly be seen on
fashion magazines
lifestyle magazines and
music, so using a different
topic for a cover line
conforms to not only
music magazines but all
magazines.

challenge forms and conventions of real media

They way my music magazine
doesn’t conform to
convention is my use of social
media
Commonly music magazines that have been around for
a long time for example ‘vibe’ don’t use social media
on the magazines but up and coming magazines may
use social media to build popularity as its such a huge
part of culture and how you get known.

challenge forms and conventions of real media
products? (Contents page)
My magazine conforms to the
conventions of a real magazine with
the use of branding, the majority of
magazines will repeat the masthead
in someway on there contents page
and/throughout the magazine
I have added a editors comment as it’s the first issue
of my magazine, it is common for a magazine to have
a note from the editor on there. Therefore I am
conforming to the conventions.
Photography is common for a contents
page, so my magazine conforms to the
conventions as I have used an image as
well as information.
The neutral background of
my magazine conforms to
conventions as todays
magazines have the main
focus being on the image or
information on the page
meaning a subtle
background get the
attention to the right place.

challenge forms and conventions of real media
products? (Contents page)
The way in which my magazine does not conform to the
conventions is by the use of writing, there is more
writing than image on my contents page whereas for the
majority of magazines an image of an artist is the main
focus.
My magazine seems to be more
information based, though I have
used an image it is not the main
focus.

challenge forms and conventions of real media
products? (double page spread)
The branding that I have used conforms to conventions as the use of
repetition of masthead is common.
The use of image I conforms to convention as there is pictures of who
the double page spread its about.
The use of colour scheme also conforms as colours in the image
matches the colours used on the page, this is common to magazines
Eg. Use of

from the text conforms to

to the text and
also adding to
aesthetic

challenge forms and conventions of real media
products? (double page spread)
Usually in double page spreads the image/images are large. My magazine does not conform to this as the
images are fairly small and information takes up the majority of the space.
The colour
scheme is
not a
common
shade that is
used for
double page
spreads,
usually the
background
is light but
my
background
is dark
therefore
not
conforming
to
conventions.
