Was/were are past tense verb forms of 'to be’
you can think of was/were as the past tense form of the
auxiliary verbs am, is and are.

5. Simply put, you can use was/were in the
following circumstances:
1. When you are talking about an event that happened in the
past.
For example, 'I was in France last month on holiday’.
1. When you are talking about a past status or when you are
talking about past tense.
For example, 'he was the Prime Minister of the company'.
