2. THE SAFRON COMPANY
Since 2008 the company has been part of
numerous thriller and horror films as well as a
few dramas although the bigger studios often
overshadow them. The company’s first horror
production was 2012’s “ATM” and since then
the company has helped bring “The
Conjuring”, “Annabelle”, “The Conjuring 2”,
and “The Belko Experiment” to the big screen.
While far from the most successful company on
this list, it’s a good starting point for this top
ten as it is one of many production companies
that teams with other studios and companies to
bring horror to the masses. With it’s
involvement in “The Conjuring” universe,
including this year’s “Annabelle: Creation” it
seems to be only a matter of time before Safran
reaches the credibility to venture out on its own
3. TROMA ENTERTAINMENT
Over a thousand films have been produced over the
course of Troma’s history, or so they say at least,
with zombies, monsters, yetis, and even a killer
condom being the subject of their many obscure
horror films. Despite not having the most critically or
financially successful films, the company bucks
tradition by creating an ever expanding library of cult
classics that bend the limitations of the horror genre
time and time again. While their more iconic works
were before the 2000s, the studio continues to pump
out strange horror cult classics since the year 2000
including “Poltrygeist: Night of the Dead Chicken”,
“Tales From the Crapper” and the fourth “Toxic
Avenger” film, “Citizen Toxie”. While the companies
that will follow on this list are much more respected
by the masses and feature more critical and financial
successes, few can hold a candle to Troma for the
4. VERTIGO ENTERTAINMENT
Founded in 2001, this production company has a first look deal with Warner Bros. to produce
films and has been a part of quite a few successful modern horror films since. Starting with
“The Grudge” in 2004, the studio has also produced “The Strangers”,” “Quarantine”, “The
Uninvited”, and “The Woman in Black: Angel of Death”. More recently the company
produced the remake of “Poltergeist”, the “Blair Which Project” sequel simply titled “Blair
Witch”, and the “Ring” franchise reboot “Rings”. The company is also producing the film
adaptations of the classic horror anime “Death Note” and the film remake of the Stephen
King classic “It”, both of which are due later this year. Vertigo has also dabbled successfully
in more family friendly projects and has a respectable library that ranges from action to
animation and, of course, horror. While not as impressive as others on this list Vertigo has
proven itself to have a good eye for horror over the years and it is continuing that trend into
the future. While many of its more recent projects have been reboots, remakes, and sequels,
Vertigo’s early success with “The Grudge” proves they have the ability, and the eye, for
potential franchise making properties as many of their works helped define the dark and
6. LIONSTAGE
One of the biggest companies on this list, Lionsgate is known for production AND
distribution of films and while it certainly does not specialize in horror alone, it’s a
sure thing that if you’ve been watching horror films since the year 2000 you have
seen at least one of their products. While this entry is cheating sa bit because
Lionsgate has been more involved in the distribution than the production of many of
it’s horror films, it’s involvement in the genre can not be overlooked. To name just a
few of their productions, “Open Water”, “See No Evil”. “The Midnight Meat Train”,
“My Bloody Valentine”, “Daybreakers”, and has been named a co-producer on
numerous projects led by other companies, most famously the “Saw” franchise that
has forever tied Lionsgate to Twisted Pictures. While the company does tend to focus
more on the distribution and production of action and dramas these days as well as
franchises like “The Hunger Games”, its history has shown a dedication to quality
