2. Geometric Design
The geometric design is the branch of transportation
engineering concerned with the positioning of the physical
elements of the roadway according to standards and
constraints.
Examples of Geometric design: Squares, circles, rectangles, ovals,
triangles, pentagons, hexagons, octagons, diamonds, and stars.
Importance of Geometric Design: The safe and efficient operation of
vehicles on roads depends very much on the visibility of the road
ahead of the driver. Hence, the geometric design of highways should
be done such that any obstruction on the road could be visible from
some distance ahead. This distance is called sight distance.
Factors affecting the Geometric Design:
1.Design Speed of Highways-
The design speed parameter affects the:
Length of the vertical curves
The horizontal curves
The sight distances
3. Geometric Design
2.Topography Factors
Second important factor that affects the geometric design is
the topography. For a plain terrain, it is very easy to construct
the highway as per the standards.
Other Factors are-
Vehicle
Human
Environment and Economy
Traffic
4. Traffic Engineering
Traffic engineering is a branch of civil engineering that uses
engineering techniques to achieve the safe and efficient
movement of people and goods on roadways.
Objective of Traffic Engineering:
The basic objective of traffic engineering are-
Traffic characteristics
Traffic studies and analysis
Traffic control and regulations.
5. Traffic Engineering
Traffic Engineering Studies and Analysis
Traffic analysis is important to have a proper traffic survey
for efficient traffic flow-
Traffic volume study
Speed study
Spot speed study
Speed and delay study
Origin and destination study
Traffic capacity study
Parking study
Accident study
The benefits of traffic engineering:Traffic engineering is the
science of managing traffic flow on roads and highways. It
involves studying traffic patterns and developing strategies to
improve safety and efficiency. By understanding how traffic
flows, engineers can identify bottlenecks and develop
solutions to reduce congestion.
