2. • TYPES OF COFFEE
Based on the coffee is made and its composition there are
different types of coffee products.
Drip or filtered
• It is brewed by hot water passing slowly over roasted, ground coffee
beans contained in a filter.
• Water seeps through the ground coffee, absorbing its oils, flavours and
essences, solely under gravity, then passes through the bottom of the
filter. The used coffee grounds are retained in the filter with the liquid
dripping into a collecting vessel such as a carafe or pot.
3. Vacuum coffee
A vacuum coffee maker brews coffee using two chambers where
vapor pressure and vacuum produce coffee.
This type of coffee maker is also known as vaccum pot, siphon or
syphon coffee maker
It was invented by Loeff of Berlin in the 1830s.
These devices have since been used for more than a century in many parts
of the world and more recently have been given a new use by bartenders
and chefs to make hot cocktails and broths.
4. Espresso
It is brewed using an espresso machine forcing boiling warer or
steam under pressure through finely grounded coffee
Denser than other coffee
Generally has a creamy foam on top-crema
It is a base for a number of other coffee drinks such as latte,
cappuccino, macchiato, mocha, Americano
5. Café latte
Coffee drink made with espresso and steamed milk
The word comes from Italian Caffe e latte means coffee and milk
In US, iced latte is usually espresso and chilled milk poured over ice.
Iced latte have sugar or flavouring syrup added.
6. Cappuccino
It is espresso based coffee drink originated in Italy.
Traditionally prepared with steamed milk foam(micro foam)
Variations involves the use of cream instead of milk and flavourings with cinnamon or
chocolate powder.
Smaller in volume than café latte with a thicker layer of microfoam.
7. Macchiato
Espresso based drink with small amount of milk.
The drink is typically prepared by pouring a small amount of steamed milk directly into a
single shot of espresso.
Café macchiato has the highest ratio of espresso to milk of any drink made with these
ingredients.
8. Café Mocha
It is chocolate flavoured variant of café latte
It is based on espresso and hot milk
Added chocolate flavourings and sweetener in the form of cocoa powder and sugar.
Chocolate syrup, dark or white chocolate used
Sometimes topped with cinnamon and marshmallows.
9. Americano
Coffee prepared by adding hot water to espresso.
Different flavour from brewed coffee.
Single or a double shot of espresso.
Combined with 1 and 16 fluid ounces of hot water.
Variations include long black and lungo.
10. Long black
Found in Australia and New Zealand
Prepared by pouring a double shot of espresso over hot water
Similar to Americano.
Lungo
Similar to Americano or long black.
Instead of adding water to espresso all water is brewed.
11. Espresso roberto
Double shot espresso with small amount of steamed milk.
Espresso romano
Shot of espresso with slice of lemon served on side.
Vienna coffee
Cream based coffee beverage.
Made by preparing two shots of strong black espresso in a coffee
cup and infusing with whipped cream
12. Ristretto
It is traditionally a shot of espresso made with normal amount of
ground coffee.
Ristretto means limited or restricted in Italian.
Straight ristrettos-Drunk from a demitasse and not diluted into a
cup containing milk or water.
Described as bolder, fuller, with more body, less bitterness, higher
concentration of acidity.
13. Irish coffee(coffee with alcohol)
Cocktail consisting of hot coffee, Irish whisky and sugar.
Stirred and topped with cream.
Coffee is drink through cream.
One teaspoon of sugar poured over black coffee and stirred, thick
cream is carefully poured. held over the surface of coffee raised a little
until entire layer is floated.
14. Café bombon
Popular in Valencia and Spain.
Use espresso served with sweetened condensed milk in a 1:1 ratio.
Asian version uses ground café and sweetened condensed milk at
same ratio.
Affogato
Italian coffee based dessert.
A scoop of vanilla ice cream topped with a shot of hot espresso
served in a shot drink glass.
15. Madras filter coffee
Made from fresh ground, dark roasted coffee Arabica beans
It is a sweet milky coffee.
Famous in India.
Frappe
Sometimes called Javaccino
It is a foam covered iced coffee drink made from spray dried instant coffee
All water-no milk, half half, all milk and varying level of sweetness.
In French, Frappe means shaken or chilled
16. Freddo espresso
Two shots of espresso, sugar and ice
Mixed in frapiera produces foam from the oils of espresso and
lowers temperature
Coffee poured over ice into serving glass.
Turkish coffee
Finely powdered coffee beans are boiled in a pot with added sugar
before being served into a cup where the ground settles.
This method of coffee serving is common throughput Middle East
and North Africa.
