Current Events Analysis 1
1. The article, “The Uncertain Future of Live Entertainment” by Sarah Edwards explains
how Covid-19 has tremendously affected the live entertainment industry. Edwards also touches
greatly on the explosive rise in use of live streams because of this. Edward incorporates many
different viewpoints and topics in her article and they all have merit.
The main statements or claims I completely agreed with pertained to either economics or
accessibility. For example, “NIVA’s cool. And if we can take this lesson of working together
collectively and collaboratively, we can be better in the long run. It’s not just a crisis that we’re
responding to; capitalism is the crisis.” (Edwards, 2020, para.6). Mutual aid funds, unions and
general collective organization, that is not founded in profit can only go far within the bounds of
capitalism. The Covid crisis has brought forth countless adjacent efforts and benefited some, but
there are countless that simply don’t have the means to find these opportunities.
Covid has also, simultaneously, uncovered the vast shortcomings of capitalism
completely outside the context of entertainment. It has shown us how intensely the U.S.
Government fights for big business and how little it values the American people, their well
beings and necessities.
Another statement that I wholeheartedly agreed with is when Edwards quotes owner of
Pinhook Kym Register in saying, “It’s cool to create access for people who are more
compromised in their health or are more anxious about getting sick... There’s a lot of [people]
who can’t afford to pay a price to go to a thing that’s dependent upon that cover price range. It’s
a cool door to open, and so I think we’re gonna lean into it a little more.” (Edwards, 2020, para.
8) I think it’s great that more virtual events are happening because people who haven’t had the
opportunity or means to attend a live show before can now access their favorite creators in a way
they maybe haven't before. This helps connect the fan and act but can also simply add to one’s
quality as well.
There was nothing stated in the article that I staunchly disagreed with, but something the
author left out was any statement pertaining to the live entertainers that cannot plausibly live off
live streaming. In my opinion, since the author readily spoke about live streaming, they should
have touched on the fact that is not a sustainable option for many, if not most live performers.
Despite that, the article was quite comprehensive, informative, and structurally, it flowed
very well and was easy to read.
