https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7MShrr-WugZbEt6Q0FKaDlhRkU/view Needs Assessment for Effective Implementation of the Environmental Conservation Law in Myanmar Authors Mikael Hildén, Kirsi Mäkinen, Jorma Jantunen, Mikko Jokinen, Raimo Lilja, Maung Maung Than, Salla Rantala, Thiri Aung Acknowledgements This study was undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Finland, Ministry for Foreign Affairs, in co-operation with UNDP and the Government of Myanmar. Important support and guidance throughout the study was provided by the Ministry of Environmental Conservation and Forestry (MOECAF). Other Ministries in Myanmar with tasks connected to environmental matters were also open and supportive and provided important information and insightful comments for the study. A large number of international organisations, domestic civil society organisations and non-governmental organisations, environmental consultants and experts in regional and local governments used their time for the study and contributed with their views, knowledge and experiences to provide a rich picture of the environmental governance in Myanmar and visions for the future. Numerous development partners also took an active interest in the work and provided both critical remarks and encouragement. All of these contributions are gratefully acknowledged

This report is an assessment of the current understanding on climate change impacts, vulnerabilities, and adaptation in the Philippines. It focuses on ecosystems, freshwater resources, coastal systems and low-lying areas, agriculture and fisheries, and human health. The depth and breadth of assessment vary across chapters due to the uneven availability of literature specific to the Philippines. In cases where there are limited literatures specifically pertaining to the Philippines, the assessment of impacts and vulnerabilities to climate change in the country was inferred from published results of related studies in other countries.

Synthesis of the outputs for working group 1, facilitated by Mohamed Ouessar of IRA Tunisia, focused on IDO 1: More resilient livelihoods for vulnerable households in marginal areas and IDO 4: More sustainable and equitable management of land and water resources in pastoral and agro-pastoral settings. The team of scientists in group 1 went through a process that included validation, clustering, prioritization and filling gaps in the performance management system. Activities were narrowed from 28 to 14 and a budget was set through December of 2013. Lessons learned included the necessity of not creating or adding new activities, that preparation cards are crucial and should always refer to the agreed activity per IDO and that representation of the group per IDO affects prioritization. Milestones and deliverables were also set for 2013 and 2014.

The study was designed to evaluate the antibacterial potential of three plants which are Andrographis paniculata, Durio zibethinus and Psidium guajava. Andrographis paniculata leaves (30mg/ml) and roots (30 mg/ml), Durio zibethinus wood bark (10mg/ml), and Psidium guajava leaves (15mg/ml) extract was obtained through the process called maceration, filtration, evaporation and the paste form was freshly reconstitute in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and tested against Staphylococcus aureus for Andrographis paniculata, Psidium guajava. Streptococcus agalactiae for Durio zibethinus and Psidium guajava and Escherichia coli for Durio zibethinus using Kirby Baur technique and the plates were incubated at 37 ºC. The zone of inhibition was measured after 24 hours and recorded in millimeters. The combination study was conducted using extract in combination with Penicillin G (6.25 µg/ ml) and erythromycin (15 µg/ ml; Andrographis paniculata) with the propotion of 1:1 in homogenous condition and incubated at 37 ºC for 24 hours. The zone of inhibition was measured and recorded. Mean and standard deviation was calculated. Andrographis paniculata do possesses some antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. Leaves (17.33 mm), roots (10.67 mm), erythromycin (24.00 mm), leaves and erythromycin (20.67 mm), roots and erythromycin (21.67 mm), leaves and roots (17.33 mm). Wood bark against Streptococcus agalactiae (14.67 mm), Penicillin G (14.00 mm), and combination (16.67 mm). Durio zibethinus showed antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (11.00mm) and Penicillin G (13.33 mm). Psidium guajava leaves extract were having slightly higher activity than Penicillin G and in combination activity, leaves were having a slightly higher activity than Penicillin G.

In Israel, desalinated water is a major source of drinking water. Previous studies have suggested that the levels of iodine in water provided by authorities may not accurately reflect the levels reaching end-users. Materials and Methods: We analyzed 21 tap water samples collected from different localities across Israel, 13 posttreated desalinated water samples from three of the largest Israeli desalination plants, and several natural water samples. An improved method of ICP-MS developed in our laboratory was used to analyze the content of iodine and other macro-elements, and determination of iodine was performed in alkaline media. Results: Our results showed that it is possible to distinguish between sample groups based on iodine concentration, water hardness, and Ca/Mg ratio. The median iodine concentrations for four groups of tap water samples ranged from 0.3 to 12.3 μg/L, which is lower than the concentrations previously reported by other researchers in Israel. Based on typical consumption, the water samples can provide no more than 3.39% of the recommended dietary allowance level for iodine. The analysis of post-treated desalinated water samples indicated that these waters comply with industrial specifications but contain only trace concentrations of iodine and much less magnesium than recommended by different public health authorities for public consumption of drinking water. Conclusion: The total iodine concentrations found were lower than several observations reported in previous years in the literature. There are currently no strict regulations regarding iodine and magnesium levels in drinking and/or softened (desalinated) water, but the intensive desalination plant application is already exhibiting a negative impact on public health. Further investigations are needed, but the present study provides useful insights for developing an effective policy to ensure adequate iodine supply for the population of Israel through drinking water.
