DEHRADUN DISTRICT PROFILE
About the district
The district is named after Dehradun, a town with two words, Dehra and Dun or Doon. Dehra is derived from Dera,
meaning a temporary place to stay This area was a thick forest region during the Aurangzeb period, thus known as doon
valley. Since its incorporation to the British Empire, numerous administrative reforms took place in the district. In the
tract containing Tahsil, Dehradun was attached to the Saharanpur district in 1815. By 1825, Nevertheless, it was passed
to the Kumaon branch. Dehradun has been governed as a separate district since 1871. After 1951, Tehri Garhwal was
carved out, and until 1968, when it was transferred to the Garhwal division, the district was integrated within the
Meerut division. Dehradun is now proclaimed to be the capital of the newly formed Uttarakhand province. Uttarakhand,
the 27th state of the Republic of India and was carved out of Uttar Pradesh on 9th Nov 2000. Uttarakhand is one of the
states of India having a total area of 53,483 sq km. Out of the total 13 districts, 3 are plain districts, and the remaining
10 are hill districts. Geographically the state can broadly be divided into three zones—
1. Upper hills— Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Pithoragarh and Bageshwar
2. Middle hills — Tehri-Garhwal, Garhwal, Almora, and Champawat, hill regions of Nainital, Chakrata
3. Foothills —The remaining area of Dehradun, Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar and Nainital
Dehradun District Blocks/Tehsils
Administrative Set-up
Dehradun District comprises of 6 tahsils and 6
development blocks.
The Kumaun division includes six and Garhwal
division includes seven districts. In the 2011
Census, there are 748 villages, 731 are
inconsiderate, and 17 are uninhabited. In the
district, 23 forest villages are situated. During
2001-2011, two new Tynui and Kalsi tahsils
were created. The district consists of 748
villages, 403 Gram Panchayat and 22 towns.
District Highlights
Dehradun district ranks 2nd in
terms of population in the state.
Dehradun district ranks 12th in terms of sex
ratio (902), which is lower than the state
average (963 females per one thousand males).
Dehradun district ranks 1st in literacy (84.25
per cent) and is above the state average
(78.82).
The district has 22 towns, 11 are statutory, and
11 are census towns, whereas 2 tahsils (Tyuni
and Kalsi) have been created after 2001 Census.

Population Distribution
The total population of Dehradun district is 16,96,694, i.e. 17lakhs, out of which 7lakh 60 thousand live in rural, and 9
lakh 40 thousand live in urban areas 8.9 lakh (53%) are male, and about 8 lakh (47%) are female. There are about 3.5
lakh households in the district, and an average of five persons live in every family. (2011)

INFERENCES & COMPARISONS
• At the block level, a considerable variation is noticeable in the male-female literacy rate. Chakrata has the lowest literacy
male and female rates at 72.88 per cent and 52.92 per cent. Dehradun block has the highest male and female literacy rates
at 92.15 per cent and 83.87 per cent, respectively.
• The percentage of primary workers in the total workforce in Dehradun is 28.77 per cent which is slightly higher than the
State primary workers (28.46 per cent) as per Census 2011.
• Among the four categories, Cultivators form about 13.24 per cent of all workers, which form the second-highest per cent,
while agricultural labourers form 6.55 per cent. The catchall category Other Workers form 76.26 per cent of the district's
entire working population, which is the highest. It includes forms of employment in the secondary and tertiary sector The
workers in household industry forms 3.95 per cent, has 4.2 per cent of share in the primary sector, 23.2 per cent
secondary sector share, while 72.6 per cent of the income comes from the tertiary sector
• The Decadal growth rate has jumped up from 25% (1991–2001) to 32.48% (2001–2011). This is the third-highest in
Uttarakhand after Haridwar (33.16%) and Udham Singh Nagar (33.40%).
•
The district has a gender ratio of 902 as against a state average of 963. This has however improved from 887 in the 2001
census. The population density is 550, again the 3rd highest after Haridwar(817) and Udham Singh Nagar (648). The state
average is 189.
• In Chakrata block percentage of male and female WPR are highest (60.47 and 38.68 percentages respectively) while Vikas
Nagar block reported the lowest male and female WPR (49.73 and 11.22 percentages respectively)
• Sex ratio - the state has demonstrated that it has better indicators than the national averages

  • 2. 1 [Type the document title] | [Pick the date] DEHRADUN DISTRICT PROFILE About the district The district is named after Dehradun, a town with two words, Dehra and Dun or Doon. Dehra is derived from Dera, meaning a temporary place to stay This area was a thick forest region during the Aurangzeb period, thus known as doon valley. Since its incorporation to the British Empire, numerous administrative reforms took place in the district. In the tract containing Tahsil, Dehradun was attached to the Saharanpur district in 1815. By 1825, Nevertheless, it was passed to the Kumaon branch. Dehradun has been governed as a separate district since 1871. After 1951, Tehri Garhwal was carved out, and until 1968, when it was transferred to the Garhwal division, the district was integrated within the Meerut division. Dehradun is now proclaimed to be the capital of the newly formed Uttarakhand province. Uttarakhand, the 27th state of the Republic of India and was carved out of Uttar Pradesh on 9th Nov 2000. Uttarakhand is one of the states of India having a total area of 53,483 sq km. Out of the total 13 districts, 3 are plain districts, and the remaining 10 are hill districts. Geographically the state can broadly be divided into three zones— 1. Upper hills— Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Pithoragarh and Bageshwar 2. Middle hills — Tehri-Garhwal, Garhwal, Almora, and Champawat, hill regions of Nainital, Chakrata 3. Foothills —The remaining area of Dehradun, Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar and Nainital Dehradun District Blocks/Tehsils Administrative Set-up Dehradun District comprises of 6 tahsils and 6 development blocks. The Kumaun division includes six and Garhwal division includes seven districts. In the 2011 Census, there are 748 villages, 731 are inconsiderate, and 17 are uninhabited. In the district, 23 forest villages are situated. During 2001-2011, two new Tynui and Kalsi tahsils were created. The district consists of 748 villages, 403 Gram Panchayat and 22 towns. District Highlights Dehradun district ranks 2nd in terms of population in the state. Dehradun district ranks 12th in terms of sex ratio (902), which is lower than the state average (963 females per one thousand males). Dehradun district ranks 1st in literacy (84.25 per cent) and is above the state average (78.82). The district has 22 towns, 11 are statutory, and 11 are census towns, whereas 2 tahsils (Tyuni and Kalsi) have been created after 2001 Census.

Chakrata has the lowest literacy male and female rates at 72.88 per cent and 52.92 per cent. Dehradun block has the highest male and female literacy rates at 92.15 per cent and 83.87 per cent, respectively. • The percentage of primary workers in the total workforce in Dehradun is 28.77 per cent which is slightly higher than the State primary workers (28.46 per cent) as per Census 2011. • Among the four categories, Cultivators form about 13.24 per cent of all workers, which form the second-highest per cent, while agricultural labourers form 6.55 per cent. The catchall category Other Workers form 76.26 per cent of the district's entire working population, which is the highest. It includes forms of employment in the secondary and tertiary sector The workers in household industry forms 3.95 per cent, has 4.2 per cent of share in the primary sector, 23.2 per cent secondary sector share, while 72.6 per cent of the income comes from the tertiary sector • The Decadal growth rate has jumped up from 25% (1991–2001) to 32.48% (2001–2011). This is the third-highest in Uttarakhand after Haridwar (33.16%) and Udham Singh Nagar (33.40%). • The district has a gender ratio of 902 as against a state average of 963. This has however improved from 887 in the 2001 census. The population density is 550, again the 3rd highest after Haridwar(817) and Udham Singh Nagar (648). The state average is 189. • In Chakrata block percentage of male and female WPR are highest (60.47 and 38.68 percentages respectively) while Vikas Nagar block reported the lowest male and female WPR (49.73 and 11.22 percentages respectively) • Sex ratio - the state has demonstrated that it has better indicators than the national averages
